For it to be successful, it has to stay RWD. If they made it FWD, it would basically be another Celica. They're not going to do that because then it would compete with the tC.

All through the 90's the sprinter trueno was front wheel drive. Car companies always rebadge their cars to mark up their price. What about the nissan 350z and the G35? They're not going to worry about competition between sister companies, because the money is all going to the same place. It's not really competition, it's branching out in the market.

Although the Z and the G share the same drive train, the difference in seating markets each car to different kinds of people.

Well there are more differences than that, but in basic terms you are correct.

And you don't think more aggressive body styling would do the same thing? I'm sure that if they did decide to rebadge a scion, it would also come with a nicer interior and sound system.

Yeah, but that would be as smart as me buying an Escalade over a Tahoe/Yukon, or a Navigator over an Expedition. Financially speaking that's just not smart. If the AE86 comes out as a FWD vehicle, it'll basically be a tC with an xA engine. No one's going to buy that.

I am willing to bet the whole rebadging frenzy of the big 3 (Ford, GM, and Chrysler) is what landed them in the 2, 3, and 4 spots and has put Toyota at #1.

As far as styling goes, it looks like a Celica and tC had sloppy buttsex and popped out a baby.

Don't hold your breath. I've heard it'll be under 150hp, but very responsive to FI.
