They have always called them stock cars, not meaning that they are stock but that's what they call them.

For example, when you go see a "funny" car drag race it still has a camaro body or something else on it... they use production cars in both at least in the name and change everything else.

The only people racing "stock" cars are 16 year olds at street races behind Kroger and shit.
