this shit pisses me off and is a direct slap in the face to myslef and anyone else that is in the military. Wether you want to admit it or not we do this beacuse its what we believe in. If you have a problem with BUSH then so be it but do not desecrate the american flag by turning it uside down and writing on it.

If that is infact you in the picture then let me be the first to say

    FUCK YOU
No fuck you. You are the one fighting for his right to do this. Thank you for your service, but free speech is not meant to protect the speech you like, but the speech you don't like. If you didn't want to fight for what this country has always stood for then you shouldn't have joined the service. Just because you are in the military, you do not have the right to judge some one b/c of their political views. How did they cross the line? Did they kill anyone? Did they commit an act of terrorism? We also have the right to peacably protest and that is what this person is doing. I don't agree with what he has done, but it is his right to do it if he so chooses as long as he does it in a peaceful manner. Again, thank you for your service, but just remember; you are the one fighting for his right to do this so deal with it.

You are right, they are fighting for our freedom of speech, etc... But that flag he has disgraced represents the freedom that he has... And he obviously isn't grateful. It's so disrepectful IMO.

If people don't like America, there are plenty of other places for them to move. Why gripe and complain? Just move on and try to make yourself happy somewhere else. Seriously

No one who lives here dislikes it on the whole. There are just certain things which play a major role and make the entire country look bad. Maybe...just maybe, they feel like they can be a proper citizen and stay and change what they don't like, so they can enjoy living here.

So being a "proper citizen" is disgracing an AMERICAN flag?

    Hmmm...

I don't think whoever did that aimed to "change" anything...just to express themselves. What I said had very little connection to that picture. I don't agree with desecrating the flag like that...but I'm not the one in that picture.

That's his right though. In fact, he is taking advantage of his rights...so yea, he's a proper citizen. A lot of people would have a problem with me having a gun, but hey...I have the right to.

I do see what you're saying. It just kills me because I think it is so disrespectful. And it obviously (whether it should or shouldn't) upsets those who put their lives on the line for us every day. But again, I see what you're saying.

An expression of frustration? Makes sense...haha, but this thread has gone every which way...probably out of frustration.

Oh yea...as for that bit I said earlier...here's why this thread will just go on until the lock. There's no winning here...everyone's got a different idea of how they think this country should operate...and one man's trash is another man's treasure so...there. Each side will just be happy for increments of time.

There is a difference in free speech and disgracing an AMERICAN FLAG!

he can say F*CK BUSH all he wants to, wear it on a T-Shirt, make a sign/banner... that's not the point, the point is he TRASHED AN AMERICAN FLAG!

But did he blow up a building? No. A flag is a symbol. Nothing more. When you really think about it it doesnt mean anything more than what people let it mean. So he wrote on a piece of cloth. Big deal. What if it was the flag of another country, say... Iraq, or North Korea. Then would it be ok?

Isn't that what makes our country great though? the fact that we allow our citizens the freedom to express themselves. This is what seperates us from countries like Iraq and Korea.

You seem to have so much love for the American flag, but freedom of speech(no matter who it pisses off) is a HUGE part of what that flag stands for. The guy in the pic is making his statement, and he is excercising his rights as an American.

You do realize that "free speech" is not necessarily limited to spoken words right? Any act or demonstration done for the purposes of making a statement is the same thing as long as it doesn't infringe on anyone else's rights or safety.

Take it easy on the caps lock, i can read lowercase just fine.

You talk about respecting the flag, but u insult him for using his freedom of speech. What he is doing is exercising his right(being an american). You're doing just as much(if not more) harm to what that flag stands for than he is.

Since you love the flag so much and hold it in such high regard, i would think that you would realize that what he is doing is EXACTLY what that flag allows him to do.

Precisely. Infringing on that mans right to peaceful protest is no better than him desecrating the flag. Our country was founded by protestors, outlaws, revolutionaries, and other people that believed they were getting jipped by a government that didn't care about them. In the Declaration of Independance it says that it is our job as citizens to keep our government in check, even by force if neccessary.

yup, but desecrating the flag is against the law... so how can it be considered free speech.... i'm not retarded wayne, and though some of this debate may have been about bush... my beef with the sig holder was due to the fact there was something written on the flag, NOT what was written on the flag.... matter of fact, the thread starter stated kinda the same thing with the original post....

Killer, I normally tend to see your point of view. In this case, I just don't see why you should get all worked up about it. Let me give you an example:

You go to the grocery store. When you walk out, you see a couple arguing by THEIR car. The man suddenly takes a grocery cart and starts ramming it into HIS car. Although it's technically illegal what he is doing, how is his actions going to have ANY effect on YOU?

Now, let's look at it in the flag's scenario.

Some idiot half-wit protestor decides to march in some anti-Bush rally down a public street. He decides on his own, for whatever stupid messed up reasons, to turn the American flag upside down as he's walking. He even decides to later on scribble on it, maybe even burn it and stomp on it. How does HIS actions to an inanimate object like a flag have ANY effect on you besides making you angry? If President Bush did it, I'd be concerned because he does have the control over the big red switch, right? But some nobody that is venting on the street about something he probably knows little to nothing about and wants to be a retard? It amounts to some idiot jumping off the roof of his house imitating a wrestler for his dumbass buddies who are video taping. It's a dumbass move, but the only person he's really hurting is himself, right? I wouldn't do it, you wouldn't do it, and maybe a million other people wouldn't do it. Hell, we all think they are dumbasses for doing it....burning the flag or jumping off their roof....take a pic.

My point is that even though you and I may find that kind of display moronic, it also serves a purpose. The purpose it serves is that we have to ALL abide by the Constitution of the United States which affords even retards certain rights. When intelligent people, like you and I , need certain rights ourselves.....then the retards can't take those away from us either.

Unfortunately sometimes, we have to let idiots speak so we can get equal time at the mic. Otherwise we would live in a society where only a handful of people get to express themselves....i.e. Dictatorship.

he didn't burn the flag, he didn't cut it up, he didn't stomp on it.....how'd he desecrate it again? maybe he was just retarded and was holding it upside down?
