Cell phones...

dtmmcnamara's thread kind of got me to thinking about cell phones and some of the features they have. I have never been a materialistic person. I don't need a lot of shit(especially expensive) to make me happy. Cell phones are one of these items. I have a phone and it has a camera, the fold out keyboard and all, but I regret buying this one. I don't need a phone to take pictures or play music or have all kinds of shit on it. All I want is a cell phone that makes calls.

What is it about all these features that makes you want to spend hundreds of dollars on a phone? To me it doesn't make any sense.

This is, in no way, not a diss to you who do get into these phones. Just a curious question. So don't take it wrong. Later, QD.

i mainly got mine so I could loose the laptop at school so when i ride the bike i dont have an extra 10 lbs on my back

also because i do construction and I see some CRAZY shit and i have to email it all back to my boss so I do not get blamed for it

and finally because my ipod broke and I like to watch video's and listen to music at school and at work

other than that like you said a lot of the features are useless....to some people, but can you have too much technology> I would rather have too much shit on my phone than no enough...my damn phone even picks up damn fm radio and does video calling, just so one can make a live porn and stream it on the net....lol

While my phones might have alot of shit, I get it for a reason. For example:

Bluetooth - so I don't have to enter the phone numbers in by hand when I get a new phone

qwerty keyboard - because I might wanna look up a website while I'm out, and don't wanna lug around a 7lb laptop

wifi - see above

music/video player - because it's so much easier to put some music on a memory card than to dock my mp3 player, bring up a program, sync it up, then undock it specifically so it doesn't fuck up somehow.

my reasons are pretty much the same as dtmcnamara's. the blackberry i have is a must for work because my company communicates strictly through emails, that and the fact that we are the only people that offer tech support for blackberries in charlotte

My cell phone has Windows Mobile on it - main reason being is so that it can sync with the server wherever I'm at to pull in information and appointments and what not.

But things like the choclate that its main advertising point was mp3 playback? kinda lame IMO

true, but back when i was "into" phones, i always bought one with an mp3 player so i would not have to buy an ipod. all i needed was a 2 gig memory card and i had an ipod, a phone, a camera, and an organizer all in one. an mp3 player is good to have in a phone imo

Amen, although sometimes I wish mine had a camera for those "you’re not going to believe this" moments. It doesn't make sense to me to spend all that money when 6 months from now the phone will be 39.99 because they have come out with a new one.

I have a Sony Ericson 8010i thats plays mp3s and has a 2 mexapixle camera, along with an FM radio. Its cool, but my favorite phone ever is my lg vx4650 no camera, nothing fancy, just a phone. That has been to the bottom of a twelve foot pool, dropped 2 stories onto concrete, 1 story onto a tile floor, in the toilet(clean water) and dropped so many times in two years I can't even count. It still works perfect. Im sure my fancy phone won't last that long.

ehh...im not a tech freak by no means when it comes to phones, but i have a LG VX9800 and the only reason i got the phone was for the voice guided gps purposes through verizon, at the time this and another smaller flip phone was all that offered the vz navigator programs, i like it, has the qwerty keyboard which makes it ultra easy to type in emails, addresses for the gps, etc, has a decent camera, 1.3mp i think, bluetooth, mobileweb 2.0, minisd card slot for whatever

i use my gps atleast 5 days a week, it only costs me $9.99/month for unlimited use, and its small enough to fit into my pocket, has the same amount of points of interest as most of the top dollar gps units, voice guided turn by turn directions, does maps, local searches for food, gas, whatever, and has a couple sexy female voices telling you where to go

I had a few diffrent PDAs and the only reason was for IA and to respond to emails from IA.. and then I woke and said to myself.. fuck all that, Ill respond to IA emails when I get home.
Unfortunatly almost all the phones now a days have USELESS shit.. or shit I do not have need for.

Don't need one of those QWERTY keyboards or MP3 capability. A camera's nice to have...because I see stuff that I want to get photos of all the time. I also like nice design and a simple interface...so Sony Ericsson is the way to go for me. I have an S710a...works great. I used to have a T637, but that was with AT&T...and they wouldn't let me keep that phone when Cingular bought them over...so I picked up the S710a. I like the design of the T637 better...but the S710a is nice, and it has a bigger screen. My next one's going to be a K790.

I always got the phone that came with my plan until recently. I just wanted to see what all the fuss about pda's was. So I got a blackberry for like $100 from ebay, then I got a Treo 650 for like a day. I sold both of them and I am back to the regular contract phone. They were both okay phones but I would never have bought them new for like $600. I dont see how anyone can justify that kinda phone, esp. because they break easily and then you're out $600.

To me thats a small ass price to pay for the convenience it adds. Fuckin the camera on my s710 is pretty badass, whenever i wanna throw some shit up for sale i just snap a pic and bluetooth it to my computer, email it to whoever, pic message it, put it on the memory card and plug it in, whatever... Even at fuckin best buy you can walk thru the isles with printers and bluetooth the pics there and they'll print.

Its just the added convenience... 'specially being able to share spontaneous shit with other ppl, say i see the ricest car i've ever seen, or my homeboys bitch with some other dude lol... just snap the pic right there, leaves no room for speculation, no one carries a digital camera with them... but camera phones are soooo damn useful... And internet phones are even more useful. I literally use almost every feature on my phone makes shit so much easier. Where i worked, email was crucial and reports were on very strict deadlines, the email capabilities of my phone made shit 100x easier when I wasn't near a computer... saved me from having to leave wherever i was in the middle of the night to find a kinkos or go home.

on the S710 you can also set it to record calls with the press of a button while in the call, which makes it perfect for making prank calls lolol and sharing them on the interweb.

I'm in the market for another phone but i'm definitely going to stick with a Sony Ericcson, this phone is fuckin bulletproof, the software is on point, and i dropped it literally a million times, HARD and it works perfectly, takes awesome ass pictures too (1.3MP)

I got the razr to show it off. Paid 170 for it with a 2 year contract. After I got it, I realized that no one cared. Now I just use it as a phone. I traded it for a pebl last month. I have a thing for Motorola phones.

Next phone I get will be a iPhone.. just because they're too damn cool not to play with. I'll wait for the price to come down though.

Good question.

1. People want to communicate more and more (most people).
2. People want information quicker and quicker
3. People want to "feel" needed.
4. People do want to be trendy and phones are now a "fashion" item.
4. People feel "safe" with a cell. (oh, what if I get lost, etc)

Thus the explosion in cell phones. Funny but I was the same way, didn't care what my phone looked like until last year. BUt with the internet capability, the text messaging, the IM (AIM, etc), being able to store data, the experts predict the Cell phone will mean almost everything to people in the next 20 years.
