Math trick

I don't get this math trick by the way...for steps 6 and 7, do you add the numbers together, or each digit?
Say my number's 244 9573...do I do 9 + 5 + 7 + 3...or do I add 9573?

OH!!! now it all makes since... I was adding 1+3+4+7 instead of 1347!
