Why would it matter? There's only one country with more warheads than the US, Russia, and they're having to reduce their arsenal as well. Regardless of whether the US drops to 500, 400, or 300, it'll still have hundreds more than the less than 10 countries that even are nuclear potent.

I believe panetta said we could save 400-500 billion reducing our arms from something like 2000 down to 800. In his opinion we wouldn't be giving up anything strategicly downsizing.

I'm for downsizing our stockpile of nukes if there is no disadvantage to doing so but this comment is ridiculous. The reason for not wanting Iran to have nukes is because of the way they will be used. They've already shown that they are willing to threaten anyone who disagrees with them with war. Do you really want them to have the ability to actually do something as stupid as start a 3rd world war? Our nukes are simply there as a deterrant. We will never willingly put ourselves at the mercy of another country so we will always have them. Do you honestly think Russia or China wouldn't take a long hard look at invading us if they weren't there?

This isn't about if Iran has nuke weapons or not, not that it's any of our business. They don't have the resources to start a nuclear war anyway. A U.S. invasion by any of those other countries is a simply silly idea, it doesn't make any sense, nor would they have the resources to make a successful invasion. Even if they did, we don't need nukes to ward them off. It's absolutely stupid to even think this, but people do anyway. Why would you bomb a country you plan on invading with radiological weapons? Do you realize there's fallout afterwards? A post-nuclear war country would be uninhabitable. Nuclear weapons aren't military strategy, they're scare tactics.
The US's military strength isn't based on our nuclear arms. If we trashed every last one, we would still have the strongest military on the planet.

Ultimately, Iran attaining nukes would be as harmless as NK with nukes. They won't use them because they're not idiots. The effort the US or any other nuclear capable country would input to fight Iran would be a joke. People should realize that no country WANTS to use nukes. regardless of whether or not they win, the price of war is not cheap.

There really isnt any point in NOT having them..sure, they could blow up 10 planet earths at once, but might as well have them for defense or a simple scare tactic to other countries that are not getting rid of them.
I am all for reducing our nuke stockpile. We don't need nearly as many as we have. It is time to get rid of all of the older models and dumb models in favor of smarter, more easily maintained models. The only way our capabilities are reduced is in the case of a coordinated nuke attack on us by China and Russia. If that does happen it is a precursor to WW3 and we can expect the UK to respond on our side.
As far as Iran or North Korea getting nukes, NK is far less dangerous than Iran. Iran will absolutely use them on Israel if they have the chance.

I agree. They hate each other moer than they hate us.
Iran will use nukes in a heartbeat. Their entire admin has openly stated MANY times they want to see Israel wiped off the map.
