Hella stock member!
Obama is already planning on doing something SIMILAR to this with his "green" plan. IIRC its about building bridges and roads and "green" friendly infrastructure. But its going to COST a shitload of money.
Solving the economic problem is not going to be a shorterm thing. we are in for 3-5 years if not more of "The Great Recession".
Again if you read the figures in the "made in america thread" outsourced jobs account for LITTLE TO NONE of the "jobs lossed in america" so that is NOT the problem. Those are Govt statistics so there is no bias.
Putting "americans back to work" is necessary, but there has to be companies offering those jobs to begin with. If the economy keeps tanking we cannot expect the govt to shoulder the entire burden and start paying out even trillions more to put people back to work. That would only make things worse IMO as our dollar will continue to devaluate. What good is working for a dollar that is worth nothing
The answer is to let things fail IMO, and to let things restructure.
We got ourselves into this mess by over consuming and living outside our means, its time to be brought back to reality.

THE UNIONS ARE THE PROBLEM, IF A COMPANY IS MAKING NO MONEY HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO PAY THE WORKERS MORE?
FURTHERMORE, THE ONLY REASON THE AUTO INDUSTRY HAS OUTSOURCED JOBS IS BECAUSE OF THE UAW, THEY LABOR COSTS $80/hour IN THE USA, ITS TOO EXPENSIVE, THEY CANNOT COMPETE WITH THE JAPS WHO WORK FOR $40/HR.
Get your head out of the sand buddy. The guys picketing for being laid off are the same guys not willing to give up any money while the company goes down in flames. They would rather not have a job than to take a pay cut, thats fine by me if they want to be that stupid.
Ok Mr. "Fix the Economy", how do you fix the problem them and i want to see FACTS, NOT BULLSHIT EMOTION DRIVEN NEWS ARTICLES, I WANT TO SEE NUMBERS.
HOW DO YOU TAKE A COMPANY THAT IS GOING BANKRUPT, AND OUTSOURCING JOBS DUE TO COST OF THEIR OWN LABOR FORCE, BRING THE LABOR BACK INSIDE THE USA WHERE ITS MORE EXPENSIVE AND COSTS THE COMPANY MORE MONEY, AND TURN IT ALL AROUND?
I just dont see how you can say increasing a companies COSTS is going to "SAVE THE ECONOMY!" when they are already losing money.![]()

Yes LET THINGS FAIL, This is a FREE MARKET, what good are we doing propping up companies that ARENT VIABLE!
Jesus, are you that thick headed. Government is not the answer to everything. Dont Bail Out the big three, let them collapse, it will drive unemployment up over 10% over night, but you know what it will force them to break the UAW Contracts and to start over, cause it certainly hasnt worked the last 20 years.

Just let things fail? two to three million more unemployed? Do you think that you are immune? That some how all this won't touch you? You live in a dream world but one day you'll wake up and when you do, and the powers turned off and you have no heat or food I hope someone will say to you, "Oh well, just them him fail."
You really are an ignorant barbarian
he's right if you would stop listening to everything you hear and do your own resource you would know it was bull shit. More jobs are lost every year to the implimentation and the advancement in technology. NOT OUTSOURCING.Originally Posted by silversol

Do auto workers really make more than $70 per hour?
How much does a UAW member make at a domestic auto plant? Various sites have cited the figure at an average of seventy-three dollars an hour (The Heritage Foundation). Keith Olbermann says that the figure is actually at twenty-eight before benefits, which only add ten dollars to the amount. Other sources indicate that Toyota workers (who are not unionized) made more last year after profit sharing was calculated. So clear it up for us. What's the real bottom line?
A: No. That figure is derived from what the auto companies pay in wages, health, retirement and other benefits, and includes the cost of providing benefits to retirees.

Ok you got me! its not $70/hour, its $28 hour plus benefits.
It still costs them $70/hour per employee. Thats all that matters. But then what's the source of that $70 hourly figure? It didn't come out of thin air. Analysts came up with it by including the cost of all employer-provided benefits -- namely, health insurance and pensions -- and then dividing by the number of workers. The result, they found, was that benefits for Big Three cost about $42 per hour, per employee. Add that to the wages -- again, $28 per hour -- and you get the $70 figure. Voila.
They negotiated contracts through the UAW that they can no longer keep. The UAW bent them over the table the last few years and the big three took it to avoid a strike. Now its time to "pay the proverbial piper". Except there is no money to pay them.
I still havent heard YOURS or DAVEPARTS SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM, except you want to make more stuff in America , where it will drive prices up an FUEL inflation. I dunno if its because you have no concept of our economy or if you just dont like talking figures. enlighten me.
People make stuff in america when its PROFITABLE, when you have $70 hour union employees, it is NOT PROFITABLE. The UAW is the reason why Ford/GM/Chrysler outsource stuff its because it costs too much to make it in america.
Lets play a game.
Lets say for arguments sake it costs $5000 to build a GM vehicle with its CURRENT structure, current employees, current plant assemblies. that with UAW workers .
If they decide to bring more of their manufacturing back into the USA that will drive COSTS UP, so now that $5000 to produce will cost $10,000, (why do you think they outsource in the first place? its CHEAPER!) The outsourced jobs will require UAW Workers which as the example shown before costs $70/hour.
What did you just do? you drove the cost of a consumer good UP. You lowered peoples purchasing power (their $5000 car they were going to buy now costs more than it did) and you made the company raise its costs which means they have to raise the price of its goods.
If thats not inflation i dont know what is.
You do realize making more things in the USA means our cost of goods will go UP right? which means companies will have drive their prices up to stay ahead/and or lay people off.
Congrats you solved nothing, you made the problem worse.
Recipe for disaster: Add 1 part inflation, 1 part Consumer costs skyrocketing , pinch of recession, dash of credit markets freezing=welcome to the Great Depression II.
Look, its simple the companies arent making money, WHY ARENT THEY? Because their COSTS are too much. Why are their costs too much? Because the workers make too much (benefits, pensions, labor hour, etc). its been proven and everyone knows this. How come you guys cant come to grips with it?
How do you compete when your work force costs DOUBLE what your competition costs? Easy, you lay people off. Shut down factories. Cut production, lose market share, oh wait thats already happened. Whats that? you still arent making money? well heres 150 billion, hope you get it figured out.![]()
No i dont think im immune , it will effect ALL OF US GREATLY, but im sorry all the economists smarter than us are saying it. We need to contract, and contract BIG TIME. The current system is NOT WORKING.Just let things fail? two to three million more unemployed? Do you think that you are immune? That some how all this won't touch you? You live in a dream world but one day you'll wake up and when you do, and the powers turned off and you have no heat or food I hope someone will say to you, "Oh well, just them him fail."

You would rather throw money at a problem that has time an time again proven it is not going fix itself. Why are we throwing money at companies that CANNOT COMPETE? so people can keep their jobs? so its better to print money and bail out a failing company that is going to need to continue to borrow money to stay afloat. Makes total sense.
Welcome to the real world, lets not sugar coat anything, life sucks. I will HATE it for the Dmoestic workers, but i would rather deal with the problem NOW, then postpone it so we can deal with it later, thats what got us into this mess in the first place. We tried to buy ourselves out of the last recession and now we are reaping what we sowed.
Is it going to absolutely be dark and gloomy, yes, but its a necessary evil we are going to have to deal with EVENTUALLY, why put it off and act like we can buy our way out of it.
I guess you think we can sing koombaya around the campfire and it will all be ok.
Im tired of hearing "too big to fail". The airlines survived, the automakers can too. They just need to start over with a clean slate, void all existing UAW contracts an renegotiate. But the UAW doesnt want too.
The way we are printing money, we are going to have a CURRENCY crisis we cannot recover from. Id rather deal with a deep dark recession than a complete collapse of the entire worlds economic system. you choose
So again, tell me how you would fix all of this........im waiting
