is that a big ass hole on the block? or is it the pictures?

that hole is so you can shine a timing light in there, H22's are timed at the flywheel. There is supposed to be a little rubber piece cover that goes over it, but not having it does not affect performance. Well...unless a Katrina flood emptied itself through there, or you shove a water hose in it.
