Default D16Y8 motor-ecu pairing help plz!

Hey everyone... New to posting here... Ive skimmed through here quite a bit over the past year trying to restore my eg hatch (super helpful place!)

...I've been doing a ton of research on my problem, but since the electrical system is my weak point for working on cars, I'd really appreciate some input on my specific issues. (there are a bunch of threads ive read through that hit close to helping but im nervous to commit to their advice as they all leave me with a few unanswered questions and a few contradictions)

OK... so heres what i believe has happened to my eg... Previous owner swapped a bseries into it... (i think based on the ecu (P28) it was a DA b18 of some sort... ) blew it or sold the motor and put a D16Y8 in it without changing the ecu or harness...OR... thought a p28 was the correct ecu for a D16Y8 because its from a civic ex (96+ though not 92-95 ex) realized it was wrong so they chopped the harness to hell to get the plugs to match up... and just called it a day and sold the car to me for $800.

These are just my theories... i have no way of confirming or denying these speculations, I just have to find some help sorting it out and press on. SO... Having said that... Heres the current situation...

Car runs and drives (its my DD) runs like crap but gets me around... The car (Manual Transmission) seems to bog down from the 1K-3K rpm range... if i engage the clutch perfectly at a low rpm and then floor it... it does praticaly nothing... almost stalls trying to get going... and has zero pickup untill like 3500 rpms... then I can take it to redline (motor sounds like it should from here out at WOT) and im only doing like 30 taching out at redline in 1st gear. Its almost like turbo lag in EXTREME slow motion... I thought it was a clutch problem at first... master cylinder or slave cylinder... but with a new clutch and all those replaced... same problem. So I started moving my attention towards the ECU/wiring... which brings us up to speed with me researching motor-ecu pairing, and realizing the problem is the wrong ecu...

Heres what Im dealing with (warning graphic honda hack job images)...

Based on these images... Can anyone tell me what motor I need to get the harness for? I have a friend who sold me a P2P ecu for $20... code reads "37820-P2P-A12" which ive determined is OBD2b... (please correct me if im wrong) And just need to purchase a new harness... But I cant find out how to identify if the motor is OBD2a or OBD2b.

Engine Code on the block reads "D16Y8 5597318" I dont know if the "97" in that code means its a 97 or not... just a guess... but even if so... by looking at what they did/didnt do to the connectors on the motor what all do i need to buy to swap this all out correctly?
what i thought/ think my options are:

-If 96-98...buy an obd2a harness and a jumper to plug up to the obd2b ecu
-or... buy an obd2a harness and obd2a P2P if its easier/more proper
-If 99-00...buy an obd2b harness and go to town.

I wouldnt mind doing a tuck if possible in here and also wouldnt mind having options to drop a b series in later on down the road... aka (keep p28 ecu (chip if needed) and purchase a jumper that will plug up to whichever harness i buy..if possible)

Thanks for reading and any help is appreciated... Please let me know if you need anything else (pics... or info) to accurately identify what i need to do

Run the p28, fix the wiring. Harness. A p28 is single cam vtec, this is also single cam vtec will run pretty decent once kinks are worked out
