    Default Engine sputtering

    Okay so this was an issues that I dreaded, but knew was most likely going to occur.

    I was having engine issues before this. My car was sputtering a little when I accelerated. I attributed it to a bad fuel pump. Thursday after work I barely made it home. The car sputtered all the way home. I had no power. I was going 0-30mph in a mile topping out at 30-35mph. So this weekend I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, Oxygen sensor, and I dropped the fuel tank and cleaned it. There was a significant amount of rust in my tank. Not to mention all the sludge I wiped out of the tank. All of that and I'm still sputtering... no power... no acceleration. My guess at this point is I may still have something stuck in the system.

    I pulled the battery cables to reset the o2 sensor code, but it popped back on. My exhaust smells foul like a high carbon type scent. The engine also backfires. Now if I shut the car off for a while all of the issues will go away periodically.

    I'm wondering if I don't have a hole in my exhaust. It does backfire when I rev the engine.

    I realized today there is a strange hissing noise coming from around the intake manifold area. It has a split second hissing delay about a half second after I shut the vehicle down.

    I had the same issue with a civic that had a similar issue with rust in the tank, Also lost power. I replaced the tank blew out the lines and changed the filter. Some of the rust particles got passed the fuel filter And cloged the filters on the top of the injectors Thats what was causing the performance issues.

    It generally does it when I accelerate quickly or the tank is below a half tank.

    I also spayed seafoam into the air intake today and saw smoke rising from the the exhaust manifold/upper pipe area. I'm going to drive it to the auto shop on post this weekend and see if maybe I can fix it there.

    I will also check the fuel pressure whilst there

    I wouldn't rule out a cat... It's the most over-looked problem, and on many cars!

    I'm not there, and I have no idea what all you've done, so I can only offer my thoughts/opinions.

    To add;
    Fuel delivery is important, and if you see remnants in the tank, then it needs to be cleaned/cleared completely before moving on..

    Know of any high speed ways to clean the cat? It's welded on so it will need to be something I can spray in.

    No, is there no place to unbolt before cat?
