Default any way of telling if a car has had a motor swap?

i did some research and my car doesnt have the stock tranny, so now im thinkin it might have a swap. my car was made in 1991 the came with A1,S1, cable transmissions. lift my hood and its has a ys1 transmission which came in the 1992, 1993 models.
so its likely to have them done a complete swap or was old model transmission just crap?

find the VIN number on the motor (I'm unsure if all motors have VINs imprinted on them)

no vin on a ef just a block code.

op it would help if had more info. 1 good piece of info would be to tell what motor is in there now.
