That was the first year of the E30 body 3 series. It's got the M20B27. Inline six, 2.7 liter, about 120 hp and 170tq. It's got a really low redline of 4500. The base 325 and 325e had the same motor, designated "eta", which is the Greek letter for efficiency, and that was the theme behind the low redline. It was designed to get good gas mileage, and one of the ways they tried to accomplish that was to use weak valve springs for less top end resistance..., so the only thing limiting the revs is valve float.

It's a very torquey motor, and all too willing to rev considering it's got such a low ceiling. Stock weight for a 2 door 5 speed should be around 2750lbs, probably a little less. There's 50 pounds of sound deadening in the trunk alone, though. There are plenty of ways to lighten them up.

Very solid, well balanced, neutral handling cars, and damn near bulletproof. Well laid out interior, and parts are not nearly as expensive as the stigma surrounding BMW would suggest.

There are TONS of ways to make the 325e faster. The biggest bang for the buck is either a Dinan or Conforti chip, which makes an honest difference of 25hp, 25tq, turns it into a different animal entirely, but this is one of the only Bimmers it has such a big effect on, as it was extremely restricted from the factory.

Mine's got a 2.25 catback, Dinan chip, Tokico dampers and springs, Bosch adjustable fuel pressure regulator, generic cone filter, and it's a blast to drive, and nearly as fast as a 325i, only limited by the badly spaced gearing between 2nd and 3rd which drops the revs too much. It's not really worth it to pour a bunch of money into the 325E engine, since the 325i engine swap can be accomplished for less than $1000, which will get you 170hp and 165tq bone stock.

Any more questions about it, I can probably direct you towards some answers.

why swap the whole i motor motor why not just the i head... lets you rev to 7000 and get the hp increases without the major tourque decrease...

It's not as simple as it sounds. The combustion chambers on the two engines are differently shaped, so just slapping the I head on an E block will get you a compression ratio of about 7.9:1, not exactly ideal for N/A. You have to find a set of pistons out of a super ETA or have a custom set made, or you can use the I pistons and shave the top of them. Either way you do it, you're going to end up throwing a whole lot of money at it. If you really want the best swap, get an M50 out of a 93'-95' 525i which bolts right up to the stock E30 transmission, and then you have 189hp, twin cams, a timing chain instead of timing belt, and VANOS on the exhaust cam, and all for less money and less labor than the I head swap. Strictly German makes adaptive wiring harnesses specifically for the M50 swap.
