    Default My "NEW" 1986 MR2

Well just picked up a MK1 MR2. Its an 86 but has an 4agze(supercharged 1.6 liter) swap with a LSD transmission.

Suspension = Suspension Techniques F/R anti-sway bars, TwosRUs front endlinks, Tokico Illumina shocks, Eibach springs, TRD bushings, steering rack bushing changed, inner and outer tie rods, new CV boots.

Brakes = Just rebuilt all four calipers last month. Fresh pads. Speedbleeders installed. Master Cylinder rebuilt. Slotted rotors.

Body = '89 Plumley mod spoiler, clear light mods on the 87+ tails, custom "PapaL" vented frunk lid, SC engine lid, Toysport front (small crack in center), '87+ side vent, shaved antenna, custom paint, tinted windows.

Engine/tranny = 4AGZE with oversized (175mm) pulley. SPAL fan on intercooler. LSD tranny. Brass shifter cable bushings. Exhaust is a TRD header married to a JanSpeed exhaust,AEM adjustable cam gears, Kirk's motormount inserts, and GM Syncromesh in the tranny,eManage.

Interior = '00 Spyder fabric seats, Kenwood head unit, Bazooka 8" sub, 4x6 Blaupunkt speakers in doors, Memphis Audios in the front. Custom embroidered armrest pad. Momo leather steering wheel. JonO Shortshifter kit with RSe plate, TwosRUs shift knob. Lots of little stuff done, like installing 87+ gauges and glovebox lid lock.

Misc = Battery relocation mod. TwosRUs engine lid lift and trunk lift. SSR Comp wheels in 15" wrapped in Dunlop SP8000's. Viper car alarm. Clear corners.

Its a blast to drive. This car is not the fastest thing out there. But for the fun factor its the best car I have ever driven. Its in great shape and you can tell it was well taken care of.

Here are some pictures Bill(the previous owner had taken)

The car also came with ALOT! of extras and spare parts.

    Her name is Ivory

The car really surprised me in just how great of shape the car is mechanically. It truly drives like a brand new car with very little to no play in the steering.

She made 149.8whp and 136 torque not too bad for a light car. Its boosting somewhere between 10 and 12psi. Should boost 12 with the pulley size but the gauge reads a solid 10. It needs a better tune. Its running rich in the higher rpms. Should gain a few more ponies.

But thats my new baby. Very fun car. This is the funnest(not a word lol) car I have ever driven.

    Thanks everyone.

    To answer a few questions.

Yes the racing stripes are still on the car. I am not a big fan of racing stripes but feel they work well on this car.

Nope the other cars were owned by the owner of the car(Ivory) before me Bill. Very nice guy.

The MRS has a hard top now.

well thats a relief lol....if the stripes work for you thats all that matters. but get that baby tuned! my 20v with straight cams trumps those power figures. is it really running that rich? or is the emanage set to a really unaggressive tune?

Its running pretty rich. The engine is unopened so it still has plenty in it. The power and torque curve look pretty good.

But it really needs a tune lol.

I am pretty sure I can get close to around 200whp with a pulley change and a better tune without building the motor. Wishful thinking maybe

But the main thing is its a whole lot of fun

    Insurance is not bad.

Stock mine was a N/A so if you were to get a true factory supercharged one it might go up.

Mine is 560 a year for minimal coverage. It dropped 400 from my 1987 Turbo RX-7 that I sold

I agree that clean MK1s are few and far between. Its sad to see that most have not been taken care of.

    Thats amazing.

I dont know for sure but it should be a max of 2,400#(stock supercharged model weight) but could be lighter since its a n/a(2000-2100#) to sc conversion.

Sounds alot compared to your miata. But its still a light car by todays heavy cars standards.

Id say yours was close to 2350+ with just the sunroof and maybe pushing 2400 with the SC motor. they are pretty heavy. but hey, with the added Tq you should have no problem moving that thing around quickly! hell my 89 N/A T-bar with 6 pt cage, lighter wheels, stripped frunk and trunk, and fully optioned out (for the time) weighs 2387lbs (with T-tops out and full tank).

Yeah I say your insurance will drop. I used to have a 93 Toyota Paseo that I used as a daily driver. The insurance for it was the same as the 1987 Turbo II RX-7. Seems crazy to me. But I wont argue with them dropping my insurance fee

Im going by what I was told by previous owners. And online specs... along with alot of research. The reason why I got this edition is cause it was so light. I researched miatas as a general, M3s, and sc300s with the typical soarer swap. Did price comparisons, cost of repairs, insurance and such. While researching miatas found out about the R package... 3 months into doing everything. (while my license was gone) Took 3 more months to find an actual "R" (and happened to find it on ebay)... and drove to NJ to get it. Since the only options that came on the R package were AC and a hard top... it has all the main items that would weigh the 100lbs.... not on it. "The $1,500 R Package was a special option for the Base Model, lighter weight, tuned handling. It featured a front air dam, a rear deck spoiler and a skirt under the rear bumper, a Sport Suspension, included shorter, stiffer springs (a reduction in ride height over stock), Bilstien shocks, a larger front anti-sway bar, stiffer bushings and a Torsen Limited Slip rear differential that was also part of the package. The only options that are on this car is AC and the hardtop. 1,900 pounds in weight." The only reason my car would be any heavier than 1,900#s right now is because the whole front end was replaced on the car... (the hood is a factory hood, not the light weight edition one... so maybe 20-50# heavier) it wasnt listed on the car fax, as most older miatas have been. So.... next question?

Miatas are great little cars. My Mom bought one when they first came out but sold it because it was just not practical at the time

haha its heavier than a 1.6 NA dude, and they dont weight 1900lbs. most likely (without hardtop) you are sitting at high 2000+. bone stoke it weighs around 2070(940kg) with a 1.6 wet....so give or take another 30-40 lbs for the 1.8 and the R options. plus the fact in 1994 they were produced with dual front airbags, and the Chassis was substantially braced most obvious in the front and rear subframe areas to meet new side-impact standards, plus the roll bar. still a very light car though, not doubting that. i say this because my friend Kevins 94 GRM car fully stripped w/1.8 turbo still weighs almost 2000lbs and his is gutted of everything. no a/c, PS, windows, no top, stripped trunk, lighter wheels, battery, no sound deadining...blah blah. the official weigh in put him at 1958lbs with half tank of gas ...so still lighter than a mr2 will ever get lol.

Awesome MR2. Ive had 2 an 88 n/a and a 86 n/a. Both were in pretty bad shape. 86 blew up but the 88 was my DD for a while. I loved driving that car.

Nice AW11. (I bet you can tell what car I have...lol) My buddy is getting one very soon. It's a 87 na hardtop. He's going to either put in a 20v or get a 4agze and turbo it. Should be very nice. I'm really glad to see there are people who appreciate (sp?) the first gen mr2. +1
