    Default I honestly don't know

What BHP is? Aight maybe I should, maybe it's simple, but I dont know what it is. I know what HP is, thats it. I dont know BHP, WHP, FWHP, what IS all of that? I overheard someone the other day, saying that his Civic had 500 BHP. I dunno, help me out here.

okay, alright, that makes sense...but then, what the hell is the difference between wheel hp, and front wheel hp?? I mean, if your car is fwd then it goes without saying that you have fwhp right? I mean...Im confused

yea, whp is what you actually put to the ground on a dyno, its always gonna be less than what the actual engine has

Yes in a since...because when you look at stats on like MSN cars and stuff like that they list the engine HP which is how much it puts to the fly wheel?(not sure if my termage is right) and then wheel HP is how much actually makes it to the wheels...

For example my car, they say has 175 HP, but only about 160 of that 175 makes it to the wheels. so my HP is 175, but my WHP or FWHP is only 160...

You loose horsepower thru the drivetrain. It takes horse power to turn your tranny, wheels, axles, etc.

i think it would actuall be more like 150 or 145 lol, its a pretty big drop

Right, okay. So you lose power through the drivetrain then. Is it pretty standard from car to car, as far as the amount you lose? And, what are some of the best ways to prevent the loss in hp?

dunno about from car to car, but ways to prevent it are to remove anything that causes stress on the motor, ie...power steering, ac, cruise control, etc

Man, it's sad. I don't crap about cars. I do know, that my car supposedly has all this HP, but sometimes it doesn't seem like it reaches the wheels.

I dont know very much either, but I am attempting to learn...

I know that if the engine is sitting over the wheels that it gives power to like FWD and MRD (lol I dont think that one is right Mid-engine RWD) that the power has to travel less distance.

Yeah I think if it's mid-engine and rwd, it handles better because of the placement of the engine. And the way the weight is distributed.

that isnt what I am talking about...

I am talking about how much power makes it to the wheels in compareson to how much the engine actually produces...

but yes mid-engines usually handle very well...

BHP = Base Horse Power, measured at the fly wheel.
WHP = Wheel HP, you lose about 10%-25% hp thru the drive train with a RWD car.

    Drive types:
    1. Front engine, Front drive (FF or FWD)
    2. Mid engine, Rear drive (MR)
    3. Front engine, Rear drive (FR or RWD)
    4. Front engine, All wheel drive (AWD or 4x4)
    5. Rear Engine, Rear Drive (RR, ?only for Go-Karts?)

I don't believe there are any Mid Engine, AWD cars. I could be wrong.

Lighter components such as flywheel, clutch, driveshaft, wheels, rotors, basically whatever stands in the way of the power getting to the wheels will reduce loss.

For instance I went with a lightweight clutch and flywheel on my Infiniti G35, the car is rated at 280hp measured at the flywheel but actually put down around 222hp to the wheels with the stock clutch and flywheel. After going with an Clutch/Flywheel assembly that was roughly 30lbs lighter the car put down around 238hp to the wheels.. it didnt add any horsepower, it just reduced the loss of horsepower through the drivetrain and greatly improved engine response. The downside was it was hard as hell to drive daily.

As it pertained to G35's, automatics see more drivetrain loss than manuals but I'm not sure about other vehicles. Hope this helped.

thats not considered a mid-engined car.
generally any car with an engine mounted in front of the driver is considered a front mounted engine. a mid-engined car would be something like an mr2 or a boxter/cayman

mid-engine means the motor is mounted behind the front axle and in front of the rear axle. Aston martin's are front-mid mounted engine cars. they're mounted up front but as far behind the front axles as possible.

would an old VW beetle be a rear engine, rear wheel drive, I dont think the engine could be mounted any further back than it is so if its not then they dont exist.

brake horsepower is the net horsepower (power delivered directly at the engine) minus the frictional losses in the transmission

Ya old beetles are RR. kinda like a Go-Kart. The engine shape is diffrent from a normal one.
