1.8T , easy way of tuning and a lot of parts available, the only thing you can do with a VR6 is cams or supercharge it , plus the VR6 is heavier i think

    vwvortex.com < check it out

Always the great debate...1.8t or VR6. Every vw owner goes through the same problem

1.8t, good to start out with, will make good power with little mods

VR6, has A LOT of potential...

Out of the box, a VR6 will beat a 1.8t. Like i said above, with minimal mods, a 1.8t will beat a VR6. Now if you start going into higher $$ mods, a VR6 is simply awesome. Like the guy said in the other post, go to vwvortex.com and you'll see most of those vr6t's making over 400whp/400lbs/ft

Most people bash the vr6 just b/c it doesn't make as good numbers as a 1.8t does with minimal mods. Those are the kind of guys that have a chip and a drop-in in their 1.8t and don't look to go further with mods. So as always, do some research, look around. There are PLENTY of threads like this on vortex and even a couple on here....

    *cough*VR6*cough*

vr6 has more potential but for more $$$. the 1.8 simply cannot hold as much power. BUT.... the 1.8 is far easier to mod... bolt ons, turbos etc. the VR6 turboed is far more potent than a turbo upgraded 1.8.

like anything automotive; depends on how deep your pockets.

Definately 1.8T. More mods, 500 bucks on a chip gives you 50hp on a first generation 1.8T(1999-01) and around 35hp for a second gen(02-05). Plus it's a turbo, boosting is awesome and they sound ridiculous. Take a listen to mine and tell me what you think. You will notice it's an auto so don't bother telling me. It wasn't my choice, thats why I am selling.

I was on the fence on this one when I got my GTI and went with a 1.8T and loved it.

Although I have driven a 24V VR6 GLI and that powerplant is just awesome and the sound is unmatched.

since the guy above posted a clip of the 1.8T might as well throw one up of a VR as well

Overall its what everyone else said, if your on a budget the 1.8T is King but if you want the best option for pure power you go VRT.

if you can afford boost for a vr6 go vr6... but if your not looking to spend that much go 1.8t b/c you can make alot of power for cheap...

i've owned both... vr6 is nice torquey strong motor but 1.8t has boost... stock to stock vr6 wins; with bolt ons 1.8t wins, w/ boost vr6 will demolish 1.8t.

I agree w/ Paul, on a budget , a 1.8T with the basic goods will smoke a VR6, HOWEVER, if you can afford boost, the VR6 is a handful, and you get the deep growl that amakes a 1.8T piss itself. I'd now do VR6 and boost FTW!

stock for stock, the 24 valve VR6 is the fastest. the 1.8t is cheaper to mod, and has more options. however, if your pockets are deep enough, modding a VR6 (a la FI) will net much more power.

also, you might want to know there are 2 "different" 1.8ts available for the GTI, and 2 truly different VR6's available for the GTI.

Basically, the 00-early 02's had the 150hp 1.8t. they had no exhaust cutout. the 2.5-06 GTi's have the 180hp 1.8t. they upped the power by adding different turbos(the k03sport) different DV and other small changes to the ECU.

Same story with the VR6 motors. Earlier MK4 GTi's had a 12v VR6 that made (i may be off) 150hp, and around 03 they switched to the 24v VR6 which has 200hp. many tuners feel the 12v is "stronger" and can handle more tuning than the 24v.

ultimatly its up to you and your pocketbook. having had 3 1.8ts, i can tell you they are great, and very responsive to any tuning.

good luck and keep us posted!

I'm pretty sure the first 1.8T ended in 01. Because the 337 came out in 02 with the new engine. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes your off lol. They were rated at 180.

And yes I do agree with the 2nd part I highlighted. I've raced a 24v GLI in my 12v and we were neck and neck. I was surprised. But i've heard that plenty of times and i've experienced it myself. 12V FTW!!

Get a VR6. Look at the video I posted in the VW section. You won't be disappointed man.

MKIV's came out in 99-05/06. The 99-2001 had the k03. In 2001.5 the k03 was replaced with the k03s, which is NOT that big of a difference. No new engine there

Yeah, that didn't come out right. I know it's the same base, I was just trying to say the second version I guess. I have an 01 , it's a consequence of me being impatient and just wanting a GTI under any circumstance. A chip would get me to 200 but I am going to buy another 1.8T this time a black 20th AE pending the sale of my car.

If you can afford to go big then get the VR6 and biturbo it... if not get the 1.8. It is easier to mod the 1.8
