Timing belt help
bout a month ago my timing belt snapped. i just purchased one from Advanced Auto. by all means, ive never replaced a timing belt. so can someone provide me w/ full step by step directions, or send me to a link,preferably w/ pictures. i want it to be a DIY'er.i like doing things myself if i can, but if i know it requires professional work, ill leave it to a shop. thanx in advance
what kind of motor / car?

If it's a 96 ek.. you'll need valves and a head job...
hopefully the valves didnt slap the piston....

yea thats my main worry. figured id put the timing belt on,crank it up, listen to the engine, and if i hear any noises that doesnt sound good, then it goes in the shop. im also worried cuz my timing was set off a bit. so regardless, if it runs good or not, imma have the valves, and everything else checked on.
my budget is kinda low right now. thats why i havent already called a tow truck or rented a tow dolley to have it towed to a shop nearby.
If you have an interference motor, then I would guarantee it has bent valves. You want to know for sure? Do a compression test.

timing belt snapped?
check your valves and pistons before you go about replacing the belt itself.
about the belt though,
on a fwd car (hyundai elantra), me and my bro took only a day or two to put it in.. support the motor, take off the mount, lift the motor/drop the motor, take off the acc. belts, take off cover, take off crankshaft pulley, loosen tensioners, mark where the cam teeth are (or set it to TDC before you start taking it off), take belt off, replace belt, tighten tensioners, and re-assemble.

More then likely you have bent valves. You are going to either need a new head and valves or rebuild your old head with new valves and all the trimmings. That really sucks though.
You may as well buy a new motor for the car as it may come to about the same price.

a friend of mine is selling a y8 head for 100 bucks. you more than likely bent your valves... interf. motors are homo. but thats honda. PM me if your intrested.
shoot me a few more dollars and i will put it on for you. and it will run just as good as any shop. and you will be paying alot more money at a shop.
well imma have it all checked out. hopefully everythings fine. i can afford replacing valves but iunno how bad it could be. so ill keep ya in mind if i need a head
for what your going to pay for valves @ honda you should just get the head. ill put it this way... for b16 valves.... 29 bucks a pop...x 16. depending on how many are fucked... and still its more than likely gonna be more than 1. get you some hearbolts, headgasket get the head and call it a day. and thats from a true mechanics point of view that works for acura.
im with milano pink, and im a mechanic too. for as cheap as u can get a low mileage head for a honda motor,just put a new head on and call it a day. itll probably even end up cheaper. this way ur sure about ur valves and all so u dont have to take it all back apart...trust me, u dont wanna do that if u dont have to. lol also doing a timing belt or a head is not an easy job and if u dont work on cars a lot or arent mechanically inclined it definately isnt a diy job. a single cam honda motor is easy but itll probably take u a long time and if ur lucky enough, u wont mess it up and burn up ur new valves. just my
haha i love some of the responses on here. ive seen some not do any damage at all and ive seen some engines destroyed. if your cheap slap a belt on it, but id pull the head while its apart. and +1 reps for the dumbass who recommended a compression test on a motor with a snapped t-belt. let me know how that works out for you.
the y8 IS a interferance motor.
You could need a valve, you could need a head, you could need an engine, or you could just need a new timing belt. I would not buy a timing belt or anything for it until you have it checked. I have heard of people breaking belts and nothing happening, and I have seen ones that resulted in major damage to valves and pistons. My b20 that I bought from a salvage yard had the corner of the valve cover smashed into the cam gear so that it pinched the belt (I bought it because it was the cheapest and had a warantee). When installing a timing belt before putting it in my car, I notice that there were teeth ripped off the timing belt and the crank was 180 degrees off. I pulled the head and inspected the valves and pistons and discovered absolutely no damage, so I put a new head gasket and new timing belt and it runs perfect. From personal experience, it is possible (at least on a B-series engine) to have a belt slip or break with no damage. Since your belt is broken, your crank is probably not lined up correctly with the cams, so you definitly have to know what you are doing just to get a timing belt on it without hitting valves when lining it back up (I didn't have any trouble because I had the head off and cams out). Anyway, definitely have it checked out before you waste any money. Were you driving or stopped when it broke?
Im rebuilding a LS head right now for someone that snapped at around 4500 rpm and didnt damage anything. You may be lucky but you gotta pull the head to find out.

you're gonna HAVE To pull the head to check your valves.. yuo can try and put a t-belt on it first and crank it and try running, but probably shouldnt

are u garanteed that the head u have works fine? if so, pm me ur number or whatever, and when i find out the outcome of my engine, ill give u a call if u still have the head.
