i would never recommend getting those chips. most of them are never spoon, mugen, etc. they are just stock roms w/ speed limiter removed, vtec point shifted, and rev limit raised with possibly fuel added/subtracted radomly as well as timing.
the problem is it's not TUNED. this would be like taking your distributer and advancing it all the way because "it'll give you more power". the fact is doing either can be dangerous to your engine because you don't know exactly what it's doing.
vtec should always be placed by tuning the car on the dyno. raising it may make vtec "kick hard", but the reason why is the lo cam will progressively lose power so you don't feel it losing it or you car getting slower, but when vtec hits there is a big jump in power. however, if vtec was placed in the right spot there would be less kick to none, but more power overall (more area under the graph that makes the car faster overall).
raising the rev limit can do the same thing in terms of power loss and has a greater change of damage. if the mods don't support it, the power just drops off at a certain point and spending the extra time past that has no real benefit, especially if you can shift quickly enough and within the fat part of the powerband. also, without the supporting mods to any of the rotating assembly or head will result in damage if reved too far almost gauranteed.
the best thing to do it to get a tuneable socketed/chipped ecu and get your car dyno tuned.
feel free to pm me if you have any questions regarding this.
