    Default new gti

i was at the jim ellis vw dealership today returning parts i bought for my jetta and when i started talking to a sales person i thought i might just ask what my jetta is worth in their eyes. well as i was talking to the guy he said "i got the perfect car for you" so as we walked outside i saw a white gti parked out in front of the door. He said here we go and said get in. He told me it was a '06 with 10k on it and told me i could take it for a ride. of course im not gonna say no to something like that. The exterior i dont like too much but is acceptable, the interior on other hands is very nice and it drives and handle great. the only thing i hated was that it was an automatic with tiptronic even though the pedal shifters behind the steering wheel is pretty cool but i still dont like it. i was suprised he pulled the automatic around even though i told him i hated automatics.

overall very nice car and very fast

the sales person was also very cool, it was his first day and i took it on PIB where its like a interstate and hit 100mph like nothing couldnt do better because of traffic

Do not discount the DSG (not tiptronic) without giving it a test drive. I do not normally like automatics but it is not excatly fair to classify the DSG as a traditional automatic. It behaves very well and will listen to your ship inputs. I love mine even when I go out to auto-x.

So, did you drive a regular automatic or the dsg? Do they even have regular automatics in the new gtis?

The only transmissons available for the MkV GTI is DSG or Manual. I have driven both but after driving the DSG I found it hard to not want it over the manual. I have two reasons:

1 - I still commute in Atlanta traffic
2 - I auto-x and you are not shifting ver often even with a manual. I can actually shift more with the DSG

The only issue that I have seen so far is if you are a big modder, there is still an open question on big turbo kits or really big horsepower and if the trasmisson can take it. Since I am not looking for big horse power it works for me plus, you can upgrade the ECU and do about 90% of all other mods.

Well the veyron has a dsg type trans and its got over 1000hp, so im sure dsgs can take some power.

AFAIK DSG is pretty much like a manual without the clutch pedal, it has a double clutch setup for fast shifts and no torque convertor. Where as a conventional automatic has a torque convertor and is a single clutch setup so its not as fast.

The DSG is a dual clutch gearbox that allows for very fast shifts compared to a normal automatic (or even a manual).
