Well, the specifics depend on the model and mileage of BMW your looking for, but with any car, you NEED to pay attention to the basics:

    Documentation of maintenence
    Documentation of maintenence
and have I mentioned documentation of maintenence?

BMW's are extremely un-forgiving in cases or neglect. If taken care of, and all maintenence is done, and thigns are fixed before they turn into disasters, BMW's will outlive a god many cars on the road. It's when average joe treats it like any other american junk and drives it for 150k miles (hell, evne 50k miles) with doing as little as possible that the major breakdowns occur

You want to make sure fluids have all been changed in regular intervals. You want to make sure all interior bits are in good working condition. Like I said, as far as the basics, it's like any other BMW, look everythign over real, real well, and if you don't know what specifically to look for, don't hesitate to take it to somebody who does. It's well worth the few h8undred in the long run

I can't comment on newer bimmers, but if you have a specific question on an 80's BMW I can gladly help out with that.
