The old RS trannies are geared a lot better than the newer WRX transmissions too. I think they're a 4.11 or maybe even a 4.44 tranny.
Try to get a 00 or 01, because you will have a MAP instead of the more fragile MAF. An RS with bolt-ons will definitely hit 14s, you will probably need cams for mid 14s though. 4.11 FYI

They handle good right out of the box, but new tires and a larger rear swaybar will do wonders. From there, your budget is the limit. It's a decently light car (~2800lbs) already with some good balance, you can can get some solid performance from it.
