    Default Need a Bike Soon

I have 5k to spend looking for a reliable, nice looking sport bike. Does anyone know of any in my price range that would be good for a beginner. I have rode a few street bikes that belonged to friends and have been riding dirt since elementary school. I am looking for a 600cc bike.

Cycle trader always has lots. For 5k you can get a nice bike. I am going to be the first to say, forget about everything you learned in dirt. It doesn't matter. Only things the same are the fact they both have motors. If it is going to be your FIRST real street bike, get something that you wont cry when you drop it. It is going to suck either way, but I would rather drop a cheaper bike. Either way, you can find a really nice bike with 5k usually. If you get a 600 supersport of some kind(cbr, gsxr, etc.) remember to respect it. It will kill you fast. I haven't been riding long and I am still on my first bike actually, I am just telling you what I always heard when I started and found it to be true. My bike is a 94 Katana 600. It is my first and I got it for around 1500 bucks. It is a really nice bike actually, despite what people say. It has a more comfortable riding postion than most ss bike and being a 600, it isn't has powerful as a cbr and the likes, so that makes it a little more controllable. Don't let if fool you though. Although it is one of the 'slower' bikes, it still runs 12 sec 1/4 mile and handles good, I still haven't even got to push it to its limits yet but will soon. Regardless of what you do, keep the shiney side up.

This isn't a pic of my bike but one I found on the net. It is still a katana just like mine though. I really recommend these as a first bike. A lot more powerful than a 250 or 500 but still not as touchy as a ss600 bike.

Also, try forums like georigasportbike.com for more info. This motorcycle section over here doesn't really get a lot of attention. For more info on Katanas if you do consider one visit www.katriders.com.

Lots of people will tell you kats aren't good bikes all round just because they aren't as fast as a ss bike. Technically it is a sport touring bike which is why it is more comfy to sit on. It isn't as fast or flickable as a true ss bike but still enough to have fun and it makes a great starter bike. I will probably upgrade next summer, but this one is still a very nice bike.

My carbs are out right now because I am rebuilding them but it will be back together by the end of the weekend. If you would like to come see it and maybe even take it for a spin through my neighborhood pm me. I am a pretty friendly person and as long as you seem to at least have some experience riding on 2 wheels, it doesn't really bother me as long as you chill.

    Later.

Actually, you can use a lot of the skills you learn on dirt. Just need to be on the track to REALLY use them. :-)

I would suggest the Suzuki SV650. It is definately an awesome bike that you can do anything with.

Buellx1, damn I would love to pick that up. Too bad I don't have the money. Hell I am selling mine to get the money to get my damn license back. It really sucks. No one wants to buy my tools, if that could happen, I could keep it.

I've got a 2000 Kawasaki ZR7 for sale. I'll let it go for $2500 right now. Its got very minor damage on the left side where it got knocked over, broke mirror and alternator cover mostly. Not even a scratch on the tank or tail. Its my second bike and is very quick and tossable but is still very comfortable. I've ridden it from Macon to N. Atl numerous times without being sore.
