Default Need Some Help! (Z31 300ZX)

Im looking into swapping an SR20 or an RB motor in, and Im real noob when it comes to this because I havent worked with anyone really on a swap, except from a friend that did an RB20 swap in his 240SX.

I have a Z31 currently that is NA with a 5SPD currently in it. So my questions are as follows:

    - What motor would I be best to go with if my goal WHP is around the low 300 mark.
    - How much would I expect to pay for the motor/tranny combo? And where would I start looking?
    - Who would I get to install the swap , and approximately how much would I be looking at?

Since this car will be my daily driver, please take that into consideration.

    Thanks,

    George

Dont put an rb20 an anything unless its a trash can.

300 is easier to hit in an sr20.

    www.heavythrottle.com

Good info ,good guys. Did my type x swap a few years ago and got my motor from them.

Dpn't know who would do the swap for you though. I guess go to a local shop.

You do know that an rb20det comes in a z31 stock in japan right? Go to z31 forums if there are any to find out more info on people putting sr's in them.

Note: I know i dont have a Nissan now but I've had my share of nice swapped ones.

Where are you coming up with that? For power, price, and ease of install I'd go with an sr. I mean an rb20 would probaly be easier and def cheaper if you can get a jdm z31 harness from the stock rb20. But it would be strung out for 300 hp. Just go SR.

i take back my last comment and say drop a VG30ET motor in it (the turbo engine from the Z31) and build that up with bolt ons and can easily net 450RWHP on the stock bottom end. The VG30ET can hang right with the RB and SR and even be a tad better because of the head set-up (more torque) it will also be much cheaper to install the VG30ET

That motor is kinda junky though and there isnt too much aftermarket support for it. The formula for 450 in that is just going to build a rebuild and big turbo. Not to mention they are a bitch to work on. The head setup doesnt have much to do with the extra torque, that has to do with the single cam but the springs and retainers on those are going to let the motor rev out very high as opposed to an Sr or Rb.

Between those id get an Sr20

Yup try Nico or even Zilvia.net if you buy an SR you can pick parts on that forum pretty easily. Nice guys over there.

I wasn’t saying go with the SR … I was saying go to those two forums and find out which route would be best to go with … I’ve gotten tired of debating the whole KA, CA, SR, RB, VG BS ... pointless! bottom line is all nissan motors are good

I dont see why all the hate about rb20's. I had 4 rb20 cars. They are nice. I am not being bias either, I had 2 sr's, one CA and one rb26. The Rb20 is a respectable motor.

Well Voya, most of the kids on this forum have only seen RB20 cars, never driven, or they just listen to the other kids, I mean, 329 wasn't hard for me to make at 14 psi on my RB20. I mean we did do 280 at 14 psi with a S14 T28 on a redtop today, and feels good, just like a 329hp RB20, both are great motors.

You have lots of choices you can go with, this car gonna be for drag, drift, autocross, you worried about a couple of extra pounds under the hood?

I know you're looking for 300, so really any of the Nissan motors will be a viable decision for what you're looking for. Hell you could even drop a LS1 into it, that'll get you 350+ out of the box, and it's all aluminum, alot meaner than a SR. SR, RB20 will need a different turbo to make 300, the 25 will come close with the stock turbo, the 26 and VG30DETT, are already over 300. Hell go KA-T, more torque and power than the SR20 or RB20, and RB25, that's be different.

RB20 will be your cheapest route, just because the SR is more exspensive because of all the bandwagon kids jumping in and talking trash about the RB20, and saying SR20 this, so the exporters and importers smartened up and they know they can charge more for a SR20.

Just remember what Tran said, "a couple of SR's will pull a premium three weeks before race wars." for his Civics, HA.

If you give it some more time, Matt can jump on here and talk his shit about the RB20's and how fast his grandmas SR car is.

An LS1 is all aluminum and that'll piss off the rb and ca people.

    "Aluminum is for cans." hahaha

Why is there such an insistance on being different? Put a redtop in it and throw a bigger turbo on it?

I have seen stock t25 SR cars come out of batlground with over 300 ft pounds of torque. And that's no shit.

You said you made it at 18psi...

    I'm running 15lbs.

It took me soo long to find because the thread title says "Z31 300zx" I had no reason to want to view this until Jay told me about it.

It spikes to 18, then drops and holds at 14, thats until we fix the hotpipe, and install new couplers. Been a while since I've messed with SR's, they do pull numbers well.

I'm confused as to why it still only makes 280whp tho. At 18lbs on a t28 you should hit almost 300.

Ok, read my last post, boost shoots straight to 18 psi around 3000-4000, but due to the condition of the swap when we received the car, it's not holding 18 psi, and drops back down to 14 psi after 4k, resulting in the 285hp.

    Cool fix it then.

I made almost 310 with my car at 12 pounds and a disco potato with my old 240. After seeing Matt's numbers I should have kept the stock turbo a little while longer.

Boost leak found today, turbo outlet was missing a bolt, and the only one left was loose, we didn't do the swap, just fixing it, stays at 18 now, DAMN. I like it, fucking SR's, I'm buying a Mustang.
