    Default question about vtec

i was having a talk with a friend of mines and we came about the discussion of vtec. now his debate was if he made a switch to always have vtec on he will always be making more power than if he left it to be controlled by the ecu. is this true or wont it make less hp because of of the loss of the scavenging effect? correct me if im wrong. honda gurus please speak up

You have an ignition and fuel map for vtec crossover, so lowering it wont help without a fuel and ignition adjustment.

he'll lose it.. since the high profile cam isnt made to make power below a certain rpms, he'll also have horrible driveability and horrible gas mileage as well. so bad idea lol.

just check out on youtube/google, ''vtec killer cams''; its basically a cam made for vtec heads where there is no ''low profile'' and essentially has the engine ''engaged'' in vtec anytime its running.

loose power because the whole point of it coming on in top end is so it can build oil pressure plus if you dnt wire it right you can fry you vtec cylenoid

Do some research and answer your own questions . A simple "how does vtec work" google search would answer your question.

No, Honda engineers know more than your friend

I love how people are always trying to make an engine do things it wasnt made to do.

amen to everyone's response, i remember the vtec controller's and people would wire them up and drop vtec to like 3000 rpm and it did no good what so ever. now maybe a drop of like 5-600 rp but still the fuel and ignition maps wont be right for it. tell your buddy to do it and see how long his motor lasts. lol j/k don't do it.

he had a simple 12v switch wired to the vtec solenoid and always left it on and complaining his gas mileage sucks.....so i guess i win the battle of that discussion..........

oh, and not to mention the fact that when the internals inside the head are locked for vtec to be ''active'', that the oil pressure at idle is pretty much 0 psi.... see if he likes spinning his bearings

I did a test one time on my solenoid to make sure it was working, and clicked it on at idle for a couple seconds, and bam-- oil pressure gauge dipped BIG time, to almost zero.

why does everybody keep saying "loose" power? Is that different than losing power?

Idle oil pressure is 40-50psi depending on temperature. Vtec needs 53-55psi to operate /engage rocker arms at which point oil pressure near redline can hit almost 90psi in some cases.

Vtec at idle would cause the car to run horrible but shouldn't see a dramatic drop in oil pressure. Skunk2 pro 3 cams have huge primary lobes and I never saw a drop in oil pressure

Weird what kind of gauge was it
