    Default Switching from MOBIL1

Ive used MOBIL1 since day one of ownership in all my cars, but im not opposed to the idea of switching to a different synthetic.

I was considering Castrol, and was doing my own research, and would like some personal opinions from the gurus.

Ive read bobistheoilguy links already so some personal knowledge , recommendations would be great.

I also use mobil 1 oil/filters. If it works why change.

Technically, most oils "work", and I havent had a chance to send my oil off for analysis to Blackstone labs or anything which I plan on.

Ive been hearing things of MOBIL changing their formulas lately that is kind of concerning.

Castrol Edge is more of a synthetic than mobil1 is.

Pennzoil Platinum has been getting a lot of positive reviews. If I were to switch from Mobil 1, that will be my choice.

seems like a waste of oil to change it at that interval

I change the oil in my Neon at 5K mile intervals. My Neon is chilling in the driveway with 170K+ miles. It still pulled a 12.0 @ 118 during Import Face-Off which is quicker than the 12.2 @ 117 runs I was pulling back in late 2005/early 2006 when the odometer was still around 13K miles.

I only use Royal Purple but I would say stick with Castrol full synthetic. Royal Purple can get expensive quick.

Amsoil is nothing more then a marketing gimmick, I've always used Mobil 1, although the reformulation pissed me the hell off. Redline is the only oil I'd trust anymore because they are the only ones who didn't take the ZDDP out. If you don't know what it is the best way to explain it is that it is the anti-wear additive that was added to oil. The federal government made all street oil companies remove it as it reduces the life and efficiency of catalytic converters, however it reduces your engine life to not have it. Redline is billed as race oil so they still add the ZDDP.

Can one synthetic oil really be that much different than another brand? I figure you should have about the same lubrication from a synthetic castrol vs. a synthetic mobil 1 considering all other factors remain the same?

Royal Purple can get expensive fast. I think it's around $10 a qt. I have used the Rotella when I got over 250k on my accord, worked great. I say try the Castrol Edge.

Just because oil "changes color" doesn't mean it lost it's lubricating properties. Honestly I just stick with whatever oil my budget can afford at that time, excluding any oil that costs more than $5/QT; I just stick w/ SuperTech oil filters. I take care of my engine but of course I have taken it to 9K+ RPMs plenty of times throughout it's life. Has never missed a beat yet ..
