    Question BMW tech here?

Well who on here knows BMW in and out, i am looking at a 740i, and have few questions. Owner is stating car won't start because of a security system being triggered and disabling fuel pump, and ignition. Do i need to just reset the key fob or reset the system itself in the car?

I know some cars u can turn the key in ignition few times and that resets the alarm. Shine some light, and what other issues i should be looking at in these cars.

check for spark and fuel pressure...if present, then check crank trigger or main relay....might not be your problem, but that is where i will start. or you could send the customer to a real shop

is it a factory alarm or aftermarket?

is there an override button at the bottom of the dash somewhere? (near left of steering column)

i am not quite sure i am remembering correctly but i think you put the key in and turn it to ON position, then push the override button and hold until the little key LED blinks....if all else fail then trace the starter wire until you find the ground relay and rip that shit out....aka alarm bypass the car thief way

Man my family has had quite a few Bimmers and they are almost terrible once you go past the 3 series. All Bimmer V8 motors are a bitch to work on and the parts are VERY expensive for them. If I were you Id get a E30, E36, or even a E46 because they are just soooo much simpler. My family had a 540i once and the damn thing wouldnt shift when we bought it. We couldnt figure out why it wouldnt shift after a few months of it sitting in my driveway so we sold it to some BMW guru. So long story short he figured out the problem and the whole reason why it wouldnt shift rite is because a external temperature sensor went bad... something that shouldnt affect the motor or transmission at all. So what I am trying to say is that V8 Bimmers are terrible maintence wise and you shouldnt get one uless you have alot of $ to spend on very costly repairs, or you are a BMW guru because the reason the car wont start might not just be the alarm, it could be alot more stupid little BMW electronic shit that wont allow it to start as well. Just my .

Life begins at 6000 RPMS.. You will notice an audible change in engine noise, large increase in acceleration and any female passengers will immidiately start to remove their clothing.

basically i am going tomorrow morning to visually inspect the car, i won't have too many tool only be check fuel pressure and all that. I'll check the battery, read the codes off it, check fuses, and try to reset the alarm system to see if that will solve the problem. It has factory security system in it. I know it's activated and not disarmed properly it disable fuel pump. So if alarm resets and it doesn't crank...i am walking from it. No gonna spend arm and a leg just to get it running.

So far i read you can only reset system with keyless remote? What kind of button should i be looking for on left side of steering column?

^will do thanks. I hope he can get back to me early tomorrow.

So security system issues is a known problem in these cars...5 & 7 Series. I just read over their EWS (Drive away protection system <problem causer) trying to figure out a way to reset or bypass it and good lord i am about to pull my hair out. 1 hell of a complicated system.

funny how most ppl that own one of those shit have their own story about it.

my dad had a 528i and it had all kinds of electrical probs. occasionally the car's electronics just needs to be reset....the button to do this is on a small box the size of your hand under the dash on the left side of the steering column ...key must be turn all the way clockwise without cranking and you just hold the button down til you see blinking leds on the instrument panel.

but yeah fk beeemurs and their overly complicated good for shit electronics, lol get a toyota...they are on sale are record prices right now

What year 740? The EWS should be in the DME.

01 740 IL, i talked to dealers and ppl on bimmerforums. They said if the EWS is triggered, it has to go to dealer. Only they can re-align the codes. I don't want to tow the car to dealer, get it fixed only to find out there are other issues since these cars are known to have electrical issues. I called Global BMW and service adviser kept on saying "bring it in, only my technicians can check it, $125 to just look at it. I can't do anything over the phone and it might need a new module". They were no help what so ever. I felt like they just wanted me in so they could make some easy $$$. I asked if i read the codes with basic OBDII reader can u atleast tell what those are? "No bring it in." I know 1 place i won't be taking the car lol.

If a BMW tech on here has a BMW programing computer at home and can come with me, i'll compensate.

maintenence is expensive. hell even an oil change is 100 bucks, 8 quarts plus a 11 dollar filter.

heavy car + ceramic brakes = black front wheels, and the pads are hard on the rotors

    plastic thermostat housings and radiators.

    coolant housed alternators.

    oil lines always leak.

    valve covers always leak.

take the oil cap off and see how sludgy it is under there before you do anything.

gay, over designed pcv system = blue smoke

actually i just did a timing chain guide on a 740i, pays 35 hours

bottom line is, it's a bmw....not really a great bmw......nothing is a cheap fix, and maintaining it is expensive.....

out of all the european cars though, bmw is my favorite.

hope that helps. if you need an honest bmw mechanic, my shop's in marietta.
