Default The Difference Between Regular & Premium Gas...

Ok so ive notice that people always saying premium gas last longer and it does your engine better and give it more power blah blah blah...
but regular gas it feels the same..
but when i put premium it seems to waste the same amount as regular... whats the difference??? or is it just a rip off?

god your stupid, Ok premium will make more power if your car is tuned for it and yes it burns cleaner. It doesn't help your gas mileage though. Your car will use the same amount of gas.

I didn't think too much about the differences until I put two tanks of mid grade in my Focus because gas was $6/gallon. After two tanks of mid, I had to replace all plugs and wires. Definitely a difference between them.

you guys arent gonna believe me and this fine but im about to drop some PERSONAL experience on ya.

my dad did a test on what was his daily a few years back. 02 chevy 1500 4.3L VORTEC automatic. he ran 2 FULL tanks of....

    87 oct
    91 oct
    93 oct

through his healthy truck with like 40k miles on it. all grades of gas were from amco(sp?) gas stations. he calculated his MPG for each grade of gas. amco ultimate 93 oct gave him such a better MPG that it actually made 93 oct cheaper in the long run. the price difference in the grade of gas was out weighed by the increase in MPG.

he had everything written down and i was at his car lot when everything was added up. looks at my for sale thread for my 98 chevy blazer that i sold about a month ago....

I just use 93 octane out of habit anyways. Hell, if I am driving my wife's Pacifica it gets 93 octane. Good test there CH@Dbee. I haven't paid attention to my mpg but I know that my cars run better on 93.

Nah, it won't mess up your engine, man. 99% of cars are made to run on 87 octane.

You need to use premium if your car is made for it, if you have advanced timing, or your boosted.

93 does burn cleaner so its not a bad thing if you WANT to run it but you don't HAVE to run it.

    Bottom line: you're fine

i heard the difference was the something with the way it burns in the combustion chamber. forgot exactly what i was told

i just know my friend has a pontiac GTP and it only takes premium. during the gas shortage he put regular and the car ran like shit. he had to use some octane booster..

there is a difference i know for sure. 92 octane has a higher octane rating and has more energy than 87 octane. typically you use premium in high compression motors because there is not alot of room for compustion to take place. my SI runs premium only and if i don't it runs like crap and i get way less gas mileage. stick with what your call cars for, it it is designed to run on 87 octane then that is all you use. i bet alot of people with b16 swaps don't put premium in their cars.

it does not add power or make you go faster you actuakky kose HP and MPG.

    x2 haha..

If the car calls for premium deff use it.. IF you need gas in a hurry for a few miles and REGULAR is all you can get. thats fine but NOT for long, eventually it will fuck up.

so IF and when you get your B series VTAK swap, dont cheap out on gas. That goes for all cars that "should" use it.

Also Dont go Putting super High octane gas in the car THINKIN its gonna run super good, cause it AINT! unless its tuned for it.

to be honest, i have no clue what the 4.3L VORTEC chevy motor calls for but it DID make my dads truck run better. his MPG was alot better with 93 oct than 91 and faaaaaaaaaar better than what he got MPG with 87 oct.

i dont own a gas station so you guys do what you do but i did want to share the information about what i know

a couple months back i aquired my dads old 1990 toyota pickup. this thing had seen nearly 20 years of 87 octane. it started running rough in jan. of 09'...my dad parked it right then. it sat until i got it back in october. the whole time he owned that truck he never got better than 20 mpg..its a 4 speed (no overdrive)...after i got it i cleaned the carb and started it on a healthy diet of 93 octane. my last tank was 24mpg. the reason it was runing rough was from some trash in the carb. alli did was spray it out with carb cleaner so its not like its a fresh carb. 93 octane gave me 4 mpg over the 87 it has been running for nearly 20 years...i would say 93 is worth running. my stang gets nothing but 93 and all my hondas got 93 (they were turbo gsr's...3 of them)

if your motor does not require premium, you're wasting your money.

it doesnt make you faster, it doesnt make your engine last longer. if your motor was meant to use 87, then use 87. not that hard of a concept.

So much misinformation in this thread.

Higher octane prevents pre-ignition. That's what it's meant for.

Unless your motor is pinging, you don't need premium.

I don't know why people get the misconception that running a higher grade fuel in an engine meant for 87 improves performance in any way. 93 is meant for ignition systems requiring a greater spark.

    Finally, someone says the truth.

Octane has nothing to do with the amount of energy in the gas.
It is simply the measure of resistance to auto-ignition.

The reason that you get better gas mileage on 93 is because the oxygen sensor closed loop feedback along with the knock control on newer cars allows the ecu to run more timing and less fuel. With the 87 not as much timing can be run and if it senses any knock noise it adds fuel as well.

The difference in 93 and 87 is the auto ignition or detonation point. The higher the octane the more pressure and temperature it takes to auto ignite or detonate the fuel.
