    Default Transmission Problems

transmission is locking me out of gears at high rpms(7000-8500). it shifts fine at lower rpms(>7000).

what could this be? synchronizers? bearings?

Most likely its your syncros. Does it do it in all gears? Try a fluid change first.

Yep, especially when its gear specific its most likely the syncros. But 3/4 do also share a shift fork, its possible you've got a bent fork.

I would consider this to be the synchro sleeves (hubs), but I would only know by taking it apart. Or even the actuall teeth on said gears.

I had this problem in 3rd/4th in my eclipse. It was the synchro and 3rd/4th shift fork. I heard that resting your hand on the gear shift while in a gear (specifically if its one of the lower ones of the gate) that it can cause wear to the fork. Not sure how true this is.

Its sounds like your clutch. My stage 2 did the same thing. As soon as I put the stage 4 in it went away. We even tore the tranny down and the syncros were fine.

sorry for the cell phone pics but got the transmission pulled last night i took the case off and this is what i found. as i already knew the bear was bad but not this bad. as soon as i remove the case the bear came apart.

as you can see in the 2nd pic that is the bearing stuck up in the case.

the 3rd pic is a pic of one of the gears. if someone can make it out are the gear supposed to have the notches on the end of the gears?

Yes the notches are normal. does that bearing spin? if so its probably fine, they get stuck often, a few taps with a rubber mallet will make it come out, makes it easier to reassemble.

i will try that when i get back to the house. but i think the bearing was starting to come apart. why would the bearing come off the shaft and be stuck up in the case?

i bet it's synchros. My high mileage hydro was wore out and the cost of parts justified getting a another trans. OE parts started to add up quick and it just needed this that and the other after starting to tear it down for a close inspect....

it's completely normal for that beraing to do that it becomes stationary when the top half of the case is torqued down.

check you clutch make sure the springs on the plate are good and check the fingers on the pressure plate to make sure they aren't bent causing the clutch not to release at high rpm that will lock you out everytime
