question about engine building

Hey this question is for all of my engine builders. I am new to engine building. But I heard that you can stagger the piston rings right above the piston pins, and it is suppose to help with normal ring wear and blow by. I even seen it in the automotive technolgy text book. I just want to know if it is true. And what is the best place to stagger the piston rings.

I've never heard of anything like this before, i would think that if you removed any material from the piston ring, it would actually weaken its ability to hold any kinda extra compression...??

i dont think hes talking about removing anything from the rings. more like positioning the open ends of the ring in different places around the piston.



i think your talking about the open ends of the ring and where to position them. i have never seen anywhere in any book or manual that says to place them in the same position aorund the piston. usually you place the top ring 180 from the second ring. and then the oil skimmer 180 from that with the upper and lower ring of the oil ringset 180 from each other. well thats what i usually do. sometimes the upper and lower oil rings 90 from the main rings.

but i have also heard that you can do 90 degrees with the 1st and 2nd compression rings. on some domestics that is. but i like the 180 degrees better.

Has anyone ever noted the orientation of the rings when disassembling an engine?


They don't stay where you install them.

so do anybody have a picture show the best way the piston ring postion on the piston.

or do u guys think that the way the stock piston ring end gap postion good enough.

haynes shows correct position, cant remember off top of my head
