VTEC Issues

i have a 2000 civic si with the stock b16 in it. i always thought my vtec was just smooth and the crossover was just not loud until my friend told me to youtube it. their is a very distinct crossover into vtec in the video than their is in my car. why would my vtec not be engaging?

could be many things, however it is probably working if there is not a check engine light.

i got it ran before and it said something about air i remember

naw man. it runs good. perfectly fine. except when i hit "VTEC" vtec doesnt happen haha. theirs no crossover

ohh if you get the codes checked. Get the codes checked to see what it is. Have you checked the oil?

codes are the key

If vtec doesn't work then it will not pull to redline (8200)

go to advanced auto parts they will scan the car for free and tell you the cel then come back here and tell us

vtec only needs the following to work
vss ( your speedo)
oil pressure
vtec solenoid
engine coolant temp

my brother car went to 8k when vtec didnt work.and sometimes it would stop at like 6k or 7k.Varied idk what it was varying upon though.

What I think Mike meant was that if it was not mechanically going into vtec then the car will run so bad that it will be hard to make it to 8000rpm. If the ecu is not engaging vtec then that could be from the CEL. Let us know the codes.

X2, my brothers SI was low on VTEC fluid, we added a quart and it worked fine, found the solenoid had a bad seal and would slowly leak.

haha yeah i was on my iphone so i didnt type it well. but yeah any car ive ever driven in that VTEC didnt work, it took forever past 6000rpm for the redline to come lol

you can for sure here a huge crossover into vtec

The civic that you saw on youtube probably had one of those fancy intakes.
Doesn't an intake make a Honda's vtec sound really loud?

EX: Baaaaaa/AHHHHHHHHHHH...?

Get yourself an intake and try it out. Come back with the results.

B16 is the quietest outta the b series actually the vtec lobe on it is so small if he had a stockintake and exahust then I dout he could even hear it cross....type R is the loudest..jus sayin

I can hear my VTEC crossover just fine... I got a b16a2 as well.

a simple way u can hear ur vtec crossover is 2nd gear go to where ur vtec is supposed to kick in, mine is at 4500, and go past it with out realy pushing ur car hard. u shud be able to hear it slightly if not feel it. my friend thot his vtec wasnt working until he tryd that but then again he has a sohc zc all stock so it dont think his shud be loud anyways.

and wat happend to getting ur CEL checkd?

I am running a short ram intake, rmf header and no muffler (don't ask).

It is a smooth transition, but don't get me wrong you can definitely tell when you cross into VTEC.
