    Default ** EF w/ B16a2 swap misfire help! **

So we recently put a B16a2 in my hatch, got it wired correctly, runs awesome... vtec works great etc.... but it has this little issue...

when i first start it in the morning, it sputters and sounds like its misfiring.. but when i clear it out (rev it up) for a second.. it goes away... what could this be?

    reps for any good help!

or better yet, could be a blown head gasket.. after you cut the car off, coolant seeps into the cylinder(s) and when you start it up the next morning or whenever, you have to rev the car until you burn the coolant out of the cylinder.. IF you had a blown head gasket..

^^ It sounds like either... 1 its not getting fuel... or a slight misfire on maybe 1 cylinder... i dont beleive its the head gasket... the oil looks good.

whoa my friend, it wouldnt run if the oil/coolant mixture was bad enough to be seen in the crankcase.. im sure while its doing all this sputtering in the morning its smoking too am i right?

It could have a fuel injector leaking by when you turn the key on, then when you crank the car up it takes a second to burn out the extra fuel. I had an older accord do this at the shop.

^ what i mean is I truly doubt its a blown headgasket, no it doesnt smoke either. Is there a way to test for this? or an easy way to find out?

This seems more plausable... it literally sputters for a split second, if I tap it to 3k once, it stops

You can pinch off the fuel supply line and have a buddy crank it, then slowly remove the pliers (or whatever) and see if it runs smooth right away, or still sputters.

They may seal better hot, then leak when they cool down. Or the temp in the engine burns off the leaking fuel until it goes under a certain temp.

I think a friend may have a spare set of injectors for his B20, would they work? or do i need to source specifically... b16 injectors?

^^ this is true, but after ryan looked at it, he told me the clip, although for an ls, it connects fine. It would have to be something else they said... a leaky injector would make alot of sense though

crappy cold start can mean o2 sensor, regular tune up , etc.

My b16 in my EF does the same thing, first couple of seconds when you crank it up it runs like shit, hit the gas it wants to die, then it cleans out an runs fine.

^^ what i noticed today was interesting... when i start it up it kind of sputters a bit.. and will continue to sputter (rough idle) until i bring it up to 3k real quick. whats interesting is it will stop right away when i get to 3k, right after i start it up... or even if i let it idle for 30 seconds first.

oh yeah moe... i forgot to tell you. it did the same kinda thing when it was in my car. but its because it runs with no o2 sensor. so i guess we can wire it up for an o2 and see if it will help.. just saying.

When you crank it, when it studders, let it run at idle for a few seconds then shut it off and pull the plugs out quick and see if one or more is real black. Check the gap on the plugs too.
