195 is the widest point of the tire's outer sidewall to the widest point of the inner sidewall

50 is the tire's sidewall height from rim to tread.

15 is as you know, size of the rim

Also, the "50" which refers to the sidewall height, is expressed as a percentage of the tire's width, NOT as an absolute measurement. The "195" however, is expressed in millimeters.

depending on the rim you could use a 205/50/15, as that is what is on my si. it's a little wider and going from a 195 to a 205 i noticed a difference in corners, could also be that i went from an ok set of tires to some yokohama's.

All of the responses given are correct, but the correct term for the "50," in your case, is called aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width.

If you multiply the width by the aspect ratio, you get the sidewall height of your tire. This is a good equation to use when you're figuring some ball park ideas on tire fitment.

Another thing, if you want to figure up the total outside diameter of a tire, you can take the sidewall height and multiply by 2. Then, add the diameter of your wheel. You probably won't ever need to do this, but at least you now know how.
