79 Corolla Alt not charging, anyone?
1979 Corolla.
New alt, new voltage reg, and the wiring is in GOOD shape.
The alternator dash light stays on and the alt won't charge.
Is there maybe an inline fuse to it (that we may have missed)?
If so, where would it be? Any other input is welcomed.

I was on my way to Gwinnett a few weeks ago in my 79, and my ALT light kept coming on. I went home and it was staying on at that point. I looked at the belt and it was as tight as it should be and looked at the plug into the ALT. It was plugged in. Then I noticed another wire coming off the ALT just to the side of the plug. It was just hanging there just near another plug in. I plugged it in and the ALT light immediately went off and hasn't come back on. Just check to make sure no wire came loose from the ALT??

Thanks guys. Yea, the ground is good. I don't remember seeing a plug that wasn't plugged in. But never hurts to double check. If I find one hopefully it will solve the no charge as well. lol

The hanging wire didn't have a plug on the end of it. I saw where it might could go in and stuck in (lolol) and it fixed my problem. So look for loose wires that look like they shouldn't be in that area. Later, QD.Originally Posted by Revmaynard

Also get your hands on a volt meter and make sure the alt. is charging as it should also.

Well, that's the problem, it's NOT charging, at all....that's why I was wondering if there is some kind of inline fuse or relay to check for.

Check the plug on the alt itself. If it is not charging there then the alt isnt working, period.

Yea, I guess what are the odds the BRAND NEW alt is just defective? Kind of one of the last things you think when you're working on an OLD car. LOL

Well let me put it this way, the first 2 BRAND NEW (not reman) alts from the parts store for my Silverado where bad. Wouldnt charge for shit, had my factory case rebuilt and no issues since.

Your welcome. Just check the obvious first you know? I went round and round for 3 months with ignition problems on that truck due to the bad alts. Would just randomly start missing and skipping or stalling when the battery would get weak because it wasnt charging right.

Yes. They can also bench test it as well (off the car).

Asshole, it's in Stockbridge. It's my dad's friends car. I'm just trying to help him get it running so I can *possibly* get it out to the OSJC meet. Lol I passed the message on to my dad about the replies in case he gets out there before I can.

I did auto parts for ~7 years. Could very easily be a bad unit off the shelf. Seems the only likely explination at this point.
Yep, told him tonight a lot of people say they have issues with NEW alternator's. So when one of us get back out there we're going to have it checked out.

If the chassie is a TE72 then you are right that thier is a hidden fuse, its located in the driverside fender well. Its a fuseable link that is by itself, It has a green connecter, and it looks like a wire that loops back into its self. They go out randomly with out anythig causing them to fail. You can use a jumper wire to test it first, and then should switch it out to a inline 30amp fuse. You have to remove the fender plastic or pull the bolts towards the front to see it. I can take some pics, if you cant seem to find it. and if you need any more info on the car you have been pm'd

Let me know how it goes, and if its a TE32 thier is one as well but its in a much harder place to explain, so verify the chassie code befor you start digging in

I had a similar problem as you described with my 77 Datsun B210.
I did some work on the car with the hood off and left the hood off and the battery got exposed to direct sunlight and all the water evaporated out of the battery.
I didnt know this at the time.
My charge light stayed on for the duration of a 100 mile drive.
Filled the battery back to proper level with distilled water and BAM, Problem solved.
i dont know too much about them old school cars. check the eld (electronic load detector) maybe its bad. . .
