poll: which one is better?

Looking to get a new car. Gonna drive it while i finish up school then give it to the wife to drive and ill get a truck. So wth that in mind which one is better for the money?

99 540i black on black auto
or
96 740il black on tan auto

personally i like the e39 but the 7 series is growing on me.

both are gas guzzlers. but i would go with a 540i both have same motors but the 99 is newer less things to worry about. really depends on miles though. on any higher milage v8 bmw your gonna have some problems. 540 autos have tranny problems in the long run. why does it have to be a v8? why not a 330 or a 530.

Gas isnt really an issue becuase i dont have a long commute. The mileage on both are the same. It doesnt have to be a v8 its just the two i happened to like had them. my little brother has a 3 series so i wanted something else.

540i has 100k and is 5500

740i has 125 and is 5000

im pretty sure im gonna go with the 5 series. found out my dad has some xenon headlights and an m bumper for it at his house.

Considered a little later model 525i? Won't be as fast but looks better and the motor is a tried and true m50 based engine
