it's not how hard it is it's how much money do you have.

that's the only answer i've heard that seemed creditable in all the research i did. if you do it legit it will cost you a bajillion bucks, but if you know someone who can help you then you'll get it done much cheaper. the only legal way is to do all kinds of safety upgrades on one since japanese cars aren't even close to meeting our safety regulations and is ridiculously expensive. you have to replace glass and doors and all kinds of shit. but if you work the system and title it as something other than a regular ol' car then you'll probably need to know someone that can help you sneak that through.
aka title it as a race car and only be able to drive it a certain amount of miles i would just find a clean shell of the same type of car it is and just do a vin swap and since you do live in columbus there is what 5 cops in that town lol you should be safe just stay off manchester and you should be good lol
it would help to know what year and what type of car it is.
IIRC if its OBD2 good luck doing it legally, nearly impossible. Since no OBD2 car will meet our emissions standards or have the necessary equipment.
OBD1 is easier to do, but even then itll only be STATE legal not Federally.
Rupertaker knows vast more information than me, he would be the one i asked , although, i doubt he will tell you HOW to do it, maybe just point you in the right direction.
There are 2 types of legal cars, STATE which is the easiest to do, and FEDERAL , nearly impossible.
STATE legal cars vary from state to state obviously on requirements, some only require a steering wheel and 4 wheels, some require alot more. Check with your local DMV office

The older a car is the easier. There are literally hundreds of S30 Fairlady Z's running around the US that are 100% federally legal, mostly due to the "Twenty-Five Year Rule" which allows cars older than twenty-five years to skip some of the hoops you usually have to go through.
I do find it funny though that Japanese safety requirements are always called "Less strict" than ours, yet they have a much lower accident injury and accident death ratio than we do versus the number of accidents they have. I'm sure a few people will pipe up with "They drive slower" but that's not quite true, the electronic governors stop you at 180km/h, 160km/h is around 100mph, more than fast enough to get killed.
Anyways, federally legal is a bit of a pain too because of the amount of money that gets paid to the government in taxes and fees for it too, it does have one upshot: No matter where you move, your car's legit.
