    Sounds like the starter

an NO you will not smell anything burnt! if its the switch!

BTW when it doesnt want to turn over try having someone try an crank it, an hold the key in the crank start position and try hitting the start with like a breaker bar ,hammer etc and see if it turns or trys to crank then!
    if yes get a starter!

if your car is 5speed SOHC I have a starter

Depends I wouldnt give it another day!

But hey I had a car that I hit the start a few times an last another year but dont risk it though...I always had a extra starter an tools just in case in the car....

but that was because It wasnt my car, so I did the cheapest thing at that time...

you can get a new one for roughly 75-85 bucks new at your local parts store....
used ones sells for around 40ish
