3tc, yep, uh huh. But all of the 4age fans will disagree. You should get this moved to the old school section or post up in there. You'll get more bites.

if you are looking to get about 170ish wheel hp, you won't be able to do it with just a 20v swap. go gze, turbo and megasquirt for a standalone ecu.

I concur with what jdmjohn says, he knows what he's talkin bout. 4agze has stronger internals than the 4age.

I'm in the process fo swapping in a 20V into my 87 AE86. The swap is fairly straight forward, but there are some problems. Such as the Distributor hitting the firewall, the thermostat housing hitting the firewall, 16v stock and aftermarket exhaust manifolds will fit if you slot the outer most 2 holes and you'll have to reroute the water lines. There are several ways to overcome these issues. I'm also using a Megasquirt 2 and using EDIS for my ignition to get rid of the distributor cap. The Fuel and Spark maps I'll be using, I got from a guy who is making 155hp to the rear wheels on his AE86 with a stock 20V Silver top running open ITB's and a Megasquirt computer. You can check out my slow build progress at http://forums.club4ag.com/zerothread?id=38756

The stock AE86 (SR5 models) have a SOHC 8V 4AC engine that make 89hp at the crank. The block is a 3 rib block that is identical to the 16V. But the 4AC has a 6 bolt crank. All DOHC 4AGE engines have a 8 bolt crank.

The stock AE88 (GTS model of the AE86) 4AGE 16V (blue top) 3 rib (early AE88's) 7 rib (late AE88's) in the U.S. are rated at 115hp at the crank. These engines can handle low boost.

The ae92 front wheel drive engine 4AGE 16V (red top) 7 rib has a higher compression and is rated for 125hp at the crank. These can also handle low boost.

The AW11 MR2 supercharged 16V 4AGZE 7 rib is rated at 155 hp at the crank and uses a SC12 supercharger. These have been know to handle 18lbs of boost.

The Japanese AW11, AE92, AE101 supercharged 16V 4AGZE 7 rib is rated at 165hp at the crank, and has a slightly higher compression ration. It also has DLI Ignition. So there is no distributor cap. Also known to handle 18lbs of boost.

The AE101 front wheel drive 20V 4AGE (Silver top) 7 rib makes 165hp at the crank. This is the engine I'm using. The piston rods are the same as the rods that are in the 4AGZE engines and the engine is equipped with piston oil squirters. The engine has 3 intake valves and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder. The engine is also equipped with ITB's from the factory that measure 40mm across at the openings. This engine also uses a MAF. This engine can handle low boost. But if you swap in 4AGZE pistons (yes even with only 4 valve reliefs in the piston it will work in the 20V engine) will handle 18lbs of boost but requires a custom/aftermarket intake manifold. The stock intake manifold will leak at around 5lbs of boost.

The AE111 front wheel drive 20V 4AGE (Black top) 7 rib has the same features as the Silver top 20V except the ITB's are 42mm at the openings and is MAP based so you can run open ITB's. Makes 170hp at the crank. This engine has a lightened crankshaft, rods, and pistons. This engine can handle VERY low boost. Even swapping in the 4AGZE pistons will only raise the boost ability by a few lbs due to the lighter, thinner rods.

Then there is the big daddy Hasselgren/Formula Atlantic 1.6 4AGE toyota engine that makes 260hp at the crank normally asperated, uses a dry sump oil system has ITB's and spins to 12K RPM.

    There are other swaps such as the CA18 1.8 nissan turbo 4 banger, SR20 2.0 nissan turbo 4 banger, 1UZFE 4.0L Toyota V8, 2UZFE 4.3L Toyota V8, 3UZFE 4.7L Toyota V8, 2RZFE 2.4 liter toyota 4 banger, 3RZFE 2.7 liter toyota 4 banger, 2TC 1.6 liter toyota 4 banger, 3TC 1.8 liter toyota 4 banger, 1JZGTE 2.5 liter toyota straight 6, 2JZGTTE 3.0 liter toyota straight 6, 3SGE 2.0 liter toyota 4 banger, 3SGTE 2.0 liter turbo toyota 4 bange, 12A 1.2 liter mazda rotary, 13B 1.3 liter mazda rotory (turbo and non-turbo), F20C Honda 2.0 liter 4 banger, F22C Honda 2.2 liter 4 banger. The list goes on and on.

I personally would go with a 4AGE. Thats what I'll be doing when I get my aunt's '84.

    you can do a 5AGE...
20V might not be worth it, honestly.
Ballin on a budget you might want to just do 4AGZE + turbo.
3SGE Beams motor (around 220whp maybe) is where you will want to be exactly but it is kind of costly.

as for the distributor you can relocate it to the front with a GS coilpack where the cam gears are...or hammer the shit out of the firewall in the back or cut a hole and make a box for where the distributor is, but whenever you want to change it, it's kind of in an awkward spot.

It all depends on what you want to use the car for? I personally love the balance and would build up the 4A-GE or add a supercharger or turbo. The 3S-GE is a heavy motor and will throw the balance off, which may or may not be a big deal to you. I've seen 2JZs, 2UZ-FEs, F20s (ugh..), etc. I'd like to see a 2ZZ-GE build but that would be a lot of money... I suppose in the end it's up to you.

what application do you guys recommend for the various uses of the 86? there are so many choices but I am sure that some set-ups are more beneficial to the type of use for the vehicle.
