Default What the hell did he say? ( Terms )

Hey IA. I am new to the import scene and cars in general.

So my question is, What the hell are all the general terms used in the scene.

Also, where is the best place to start when trying to learn more?

As far as the terms, I stay away from ricer talk...

If you want to learn, start by reading up on things using credible sources- Car mags, credible websites. Try to stay away from learning things from forums... 99% of the time people are completely wrong. If you want advice from a forum, make sure it's from a person with a good reputation and history of working on cars. There are quite a few very knowledgible people on IA, but about 10 times as many complete idiots. Just make sure the source of any info is credible. Always double check things. Then get some hands on time. I started working on cars when I was 13, on a early 70's Trans Am. I moved to imports by age 16. My first work on imports was doing some basic bolt on upgrades. These are usually pretty simple, and a good place to learn. From there I have moved up and done everything from engine work to body work at some point or another (as a hobby, never professionally). For the last year or so I haven't had much time for cars, but I'm planning on buying a project sometime in early 2009... I'll have to brush up on some things lol.

honestly, the honda is a good starting point, being (mostly) easy to work on and cheap to fix up, but there are sooo many modified honda's on the road these days. I would suggest trying something different. What is your price range on a car?

At the moment, I am looking for Fast and Durable. Any car I buy, it will double as my daily. my price range is 1k to about 8k. I am not looking to be a ricer, so looks don't really matter to me, all I ask for is clean paint and no dents.

Buy a s2000 or a RSX. Don't get a Integra or civic! Everyone has those!

Then cough up about 30k for a Supra. Prob the toughest, quick car you can purchase.

Stick with a honda. Bunch of parts, you can learn the lingo fairly quickly. I say get a 92-95 Hatch, gut it and nice stock H22 swap for great power to weight ratio. Most go with a B16 to boost them.

I saw a s2000 on auction starting for 750 ending on 15. And the RSX looks so fly.

If this is Hell, I'll sin and sin to get deeper into those flaming pits.

I'll stick with NA, from what I hear, even though it's cheaper to be boosted it's has a lot of negatives. (amirite?)
I am into the scene for the speed aspect even though sometimes the Need For Speed look is appealing.

If you want speed... boost will be your cup of tea, turbo is not hard once you learn how it works... and if it is tuned right... "most important"

What kind of car are you looking at buying?

Honda at the moment seems to the beginners choice for me. Though I am open minded to suggestions.

Then i would suggest a 90-00 hatch, and start with the stock motor thats in, it to get the jist of things... throw a turbo kit on it.. and if you blow it... well d-series motors are a dime a dozen...lol

    -Ant,

I've got a friend with a 94 Supra TT 6 speed 130k miles clean title that he has up for sale. He's asking $19k. The car is clean, but he's having a hard time selling with the economy low. He was originally asking in the low to mid $20k's.

That would be a great dependable project car for someone!

Holy shit, Thank you, Man. I have a lot of material to start from. Some of this stuff should be taken from this thread and put into a sticky because it's really informative for people who are just getting into the scene. Again, Big Props to you guys.
