    Default 1.8t passat wagon - potential ?

Looking at a 1998 1.8t passat wagon with a manual transmission. Just wandering what kind of potential I am looking at with this car. I dont wanna break speed records just looking at a fun to drive wagon.

So how can bolt ons get me wih this car? Will the newer 1.8 motors fit in it?

TONS of potential, that would be a sick car.

98 is a great year as it is the last year of the AEB block, which has bigger intake ports than the newer drive by wire 1.8t's. It's a saught after head in the vw world, so you already have that going for you.

That being said there is no need to put a newer 1.8t in it, it would just be an overall hassle.

Chipped with basic boltons (turbo back exhaust, intake, diverter valve) you could probably make 200hp. If you did a moderate sized turbo like a gt28 or small t3/t4 then you could make 280 to who knows. gt35 you are looking at 350ish up.

Not extremely familiar with those cars, but thats what I got for you.

Id love to see you build it up.

Is the block good for it? A lot of failures with increased boost?

Yeah the block is good for it.

All the blocks are the same like I said, and people run 300hp all day no problems. I rarely if ever hear of big turbos with issues.

As for chipped cars at 225hp you never hear of issues. The stock turbo is very small and from the factory the 98 1.8t probably runs 8psi, chipped it will do 20 psi giving you that jump in power up to the 200 range, and the engine handles the extra power fine.

About 14-15 psi with the chip depending where you hook up the line for the boost gauge. Hook up the like before the intercooler and you read 20 psi. Hook up the like after the intercooler like in the intake manifold which gives you and accuret reading of actual boost going into the motor and its like 14.5 psi.

that block is good for 325-350max DD... my 1.8t was 225whp/290lbs and it could of made more. i would suggest in this order:

    - giac flash + forge dv approx 500$ (eurotechatlanta.com) call brian tell him paul from IA sent you and you will get a discount

    - evo intake

    - TT(techtonics tuning) downpipe + hiflo cat

    - 2.5" custom exhaust (i did 2.5" custom pipe to flowmaster single in/out)

    - FMIC (i had greddy; only issue you have to loose core support)

    - larger abd inlet pipe

    - manifold gasket (drops temp)

    - add race file to GIAC flash
if you do all of that you will easily make those numbers and have a low 13 sec dub

but Paul didn't you have a GTI?? it's pretty hard to get those numbers out of a passat without all the upgrades you listed plus alittle bigger turbo

The most you'll get out of the motor is about 195-200...thats with the chip and a few other little stuff. Most people do the K04 upgrade to get 225whp.

check out www.passatworld.com/forums (wealth of info)
Im in there under the same name

and when considering this, what miles and is the timing belt done with all the other things that need to be changed at the same time.

2.0Ts just make power so efficiently...300 hp is a cake walk vs a 1.8T.

I have the next gen B6 passat wagon, and love the looks it gets as a modded mommy car. Get it, the 1.8T is easy to make power with, and dropped on wheels they look dope.

also depending on the engine code some 1.8T have 150HP some 180HP.
    150HP chipped- 195 to 200HP with intake
    180HP chipped- 220 to 225HP with intake
If you go KO4 with the ecu upgrade for the KO4 a higher pressure FPR intake and a free flaw exhaust you will be looking at about 240 to 245HP.
Neuspeed.com sell the full KO4 kit for 2K a real good deal for what you get.
Once with the bigger turbo or even just a chip get a different diverter valve. If you do not replace it that can make you lose alot of power. It took me a month to figure out I had to change that out after the bigger turbo.

    Good info here, thanks guys.

A4 1.8T coming soon I think, lol. From my research I am just going to chip it w/an upgraded DV for teh extra oomp. Late next year, maybe BT, but not for sure. I am going to enjoy the comfort of the Audi.
