Car: 1989 VW Cabriolet
-Fuel IS getting to the motor
-NEW- spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotor button, fuel pump, and fuel filter.
-Battery is up and has a good charge
-Spark from coil is orange
-Spark gets to the distributor cap from the coil wire
-Spark will leave the cap
-No spark at the end of the plug wires
-No spark from the plugs
-(holding these ignition components about a 1/4 inch from the head for a ground)
The exhaust smells like straight gas. The owner says before the fuel pump, he could spray starter fluid in the intake and it'd run for about 10 seconds. I installed the new parts mentioned and it just turns over sounding like it's trying to start every other revolution, but won't actually run. I transfered the plug wires/distributor cap one by one as to not mess up the firing order.
I'm lost as to what to try besides a coil, I believe it's a weak coil. Does this sound like a correct diagnosis?
