What gear you are in doesn't affect if VTEC kicks in or not. Maybe you just aren't hearing it? Check your oil level 1st. It's the easiest first procedure.

it could be that your 1st gear is going by too quick for you to tell if its engaging or not, thus why you feel it in 2nd and so fourth..... but if it really isnt working in 1st gear change your speed sensor
    I give out reps....

Can you actually hear the VTEC?

I have an older 98 Accord with VTEC and I dont hear or feel anything when it suppsedly changes at 5400rpm.

Accords dont "kick" as much as Civic's do. The Accord is heavier and doesn't feel the response like the lighter Civic's do.

correct me if I am wrong but there are 3 things that control vtec.

    1.oil pressure
    2.engine temp
    3.engine speed

so if the car is warm and has oil and you have done nothing to change the ecu vtec crossover then your car is the rare 2nd through 5th gear vtec(j/k). It could be your temp sensor. If it doesn't work then your car won't go into vtec. Check your vtec solenoid.....aka clean it out if the screen is clogged. Make sure you have oil so that you are making enough oil pressure. Also....but not likely.....your oil pump is going out and maybe not making enough oil pressure to switch vtec on.....just my 2 cents, im not a mechanic but have had this problem on many hondas.....hence why I have the car in my sig.....hope this helps

I dont know about your engine or about sohc vtec

But with my H22 Dohc Vtec, if VTEC is not engaging then my stock ECU sets the limiter to about 7200rpm.

When VTEC is working the limiter is at 8000.

Is the rev limiter lower in first gear then all the other ones or is it same throughout all gears?

If I remember correctly, the ecu doesn't know what gear you are in. It runs the same fuel/ignition maps and vtec engagement point in every gear, so it wouldn't keep vtec from engaging in first.

The 1st thing is to check and see if you are throwing any codes... do that, then post back in here.

I've read through these posts and laugh. V-tech can be quite perplexing. I have 2 ecu's, both chipped with 2 totally different maps. On ECU #1 my V does not engage in 1st or 2nd, however the other ECU will allow engagement throughout. Where's an intelligent answer for this? Yes my vtec pressure screen is clean, plenty of oil, new oil pump, temp sens. is good, and motor is warm.

Clean tach signal to the ECU? Also have you tested the "workinga" ECUs in other cars? You never answered if you are throwing ANY codes.

hey EFlove when you say you cleaned the vtec pressure screen. how did you clean it?
Heard VTEC Solenoid = non servicable. if your screen was clogged then something else was wrong with your car that made all the trash go to the solenoid.

things that control vtec are rpm, throttle position, coolant temp, vehicle speed sensor, oil pressure sensor according to the chilton, unless its chipped then you can control all this in the tune.
