im with him, i think they are just plane over-engineered.

i have had 3. a 73 bavaria, a 00 540i m package and a 01 540i m package(both 6 speed)

hate them. everything breaks. between 2 cars i have been thru 6 raditors 3 water pumps, a coolent tank,3 cluths, a p.s. pump, and now recently waiting on a water pump.

which btw is water cooled and is fucking an arm and a leg. and i have been waiting for it for about 3 weeks now.

Wow... E39's are super reliable, quality built but yes the rads are weak. Replace the rad with zionville and you are set.

I have two of them and I'm here. Also on Bf, but I wanted to see what goes on here too.

To the poster with the 540s, that's why I got rid of mine. The V8s can be costly.
