A/C Question

Alright.. as most of you know... i bought the 95 ej couple months ago... and it needs work.... clutch/body/paint/ and most importantly right now.. A/C!!!!

i had my gf's dad check it out for me... he checked the readings on it... he said the readings looked fine but it could use a little freon...
(what was strange about this is i had it for about a month and a half and it would never blow cold air... and this time as we were checking it.. it was "semi cold")

so we go buy the freon... crank the car/air... but the clutch never started spinning/engaged... so of course.. NO COLD AIR... and we couldn't put the freon in...

since then i've tinkered with some of the connections.. just making sure it's not electrical (which i still haven't ruled out)... but it every once in awhile will work... and then normally about 15 minutes (sometimes less) into the ride.. will stop working...

i haven't got it to work in a couple weeks now... but i'm wondering what the problem could be...

i've tried looking up ac schematics/diagrams for it but come up empty handed always...

any ideas??? it's so strange to me that sometimes it works.. then sometimes doesn't...

i was told to check some sort of "switch" under the hood.. but have no idea where it's at... was told that the "switch" may need to be replaced...

I would not be able to guess anything if the clutch sometimes work and sometimes doesn't the A/C went out in one of my car a few months ago and it was just a rock holw in the condenser. I would tell you to make sure there are no leaks there but if there were, your clutch wouldn't engage at all.

yeah, like i said.. my gf's dad checked the high and low pressure when the clutch engaged the first time and everything seemed fine.. (from what he said) then the next time we tried it it just wouldn't engage...

take it to a shop with a ac machine let them evacuate/recharge the system. i bet u got a lot of air in the system or its over filled.

so this would cause it to not engage at all???

anyone know how much this normally runs???

well its not that expensive at the shop where i work cause most of the people there only go there for an A/C recharge but its true what no_mo_honda says if there is to much the clutch will act funny kick on and kick off

I think doing an A/C recharge could potentially be a waste of money if you are not %110 of what it is.
I paid $150 at Pep Boys. They had it done in a few hours.

at the end of the day it needs to be at a shop. to be checked out.

Indeed. But to have to pay $150 for something that is not an A/C diagnosis sounds kind st00pid. Even if you had that kind of money, just pay a diagnosis fee and find out exactly what it is.

unless he got the gauges and know what pressures it needs to be at. it needs to be in a shop. someplace that will warranty there a/c work.

my gf's dad had the gauges and did the reading... that's when he decided it needed a recharge... then when we went to do check the readings again and put the freon in.. that's when it stopped working (he hadn't put the freon in yet)

from what i understand everydayI do an A/C recharge is you need to vacum the a/c lines so that the car can hold its on factory specs maximum charge and that way it would run perfect so honestly it all depends on you how good do you want your a/c to be and how long do you want it to last.

overfill or underfill can cause the clutch to not engage, there is a pressure switch.

also we were looking to find the "glass" that you lookin to see if there is too much freon or not enough... and we couldn't find anything... or the pressure switch..

Most people just hook the can up on the low side and run it for a minute and since he says the compressor wont come on to vacuum it will fill. So hes not using a machine.

If you dont have a machine you can only add freon when the compressor is working. Take the car to a shop with a machine, and have the system evacuated, vacuumed and then filled with the proper amount of freon. I work at a dealer and its usually less than $100 depending on the amount of freon needed.,

if the car is older and the system has been sitting and not getting alot of use ur expansion valve could be bad i just hooked my a/c back up in my hatch and i was not getting any cold air took it to a shop and it turned out the expansion valve was bad it works great know though.
