    Default Test Pipes?

okay, I did some searching around and found I can use a "test pipe" to delete the catalytic converter....I am suspecting my stock cat is clogged and a replacement is $400+....

I am looking at Omni Test pipe...and I guess my catalytic converter is attached to the stock exhaust manifold? does the test pipe just go in place of it? or will I have to get a new header as well?

sorry, I am new to honda's.

    btw, it's a bone stock D16y7.

and I do not have emissions here in Columbus....so I am not worried about emission testing.

uhm the catalytic converter will come off in 4 bolts , 2 on each side...how will you pass emissions?

you could just gut your stock cat, but a test pipe will flow better.

I don't really care for power gains or anything like that...

this is my DD for my 80mile commute, and I just want the best fuel saving possible....

Don't pollute the air, buy a universal Magnaflow high flow cat (under $150) and get it welded. The HP difference between test-pipe Vs. high flow cat is VERY minimal.

The latest issue of Grassroots Motorsports tests several high flow cats against a test pipe and the stock cat on Miata. It's a pretty good read. They also do a gas analysis of the cats tested.

Go the auto parts store. Cats only cost like 100 to 150. Dealers always over charge stuff.

forgive me for being so noobish with questions, but I have no idea about honda motors.

so, what you guys are telling me, I can unbolt the cat that is connected to the bottom of my exhaust manifold (header), so what do I put in place of empty area? because I know the pipe goes under the car and then there is a resonator then to the exhaust....

    so basically it's

    exhaust manifold
    catalytic converter
    resonator
    exhaust

but the cat is connected right to the header? I'm sure someone knows what I am talking about

    it's a 97 LX d series motors

The cat should be in line with the exhast piping.. I don't remember if it bolts directly to the header...

Unless you have the annoying one that looks like this

If you do, then you should probably just cough up the cash or gut it.

PS - Test pipes/gutted cats are louuuud..

Fuck stance. Stance is for kids in skinny jeans with Justin Beiber haircuts. You don't need stance when you got swagger.

see, that's what I have! never seen anything like it....I dont think I can take the cat off of it.

and no I don't want to cough up the cash for this, because it's my DD...I am keeping this economical as possible, because I only bought this car for my long commutes, not a show car, not a racer (haha) just beating it on the highways

take a ziz-wheel(small abrasive cutter) cut the cat open, destroy the guts, weld/have it welded back together. done.

gutting it would be the cheapest but if you did that then you might want to put 2 mufflers on or another resonator or s-thin because a 80 mile commute can get very annoying after a while of that sound.

    Just take off the header.

And gut the cat. Take all the material out.

    Simple, Free, better gas mileage.

I've seen this done on a EK civic.

The car gained 7whp on a dyno.

Which leads me to believe the cat was clogged.

you do know it's not the regular "cat" right?

    it's this one...

if that's what you need, then sure...10 bucks sounds great. but I'm not gonna deliver this bad boy, it'll go as far as columbus or newnan.....so it's basically how far you are and how bad you want it.
