    A leakage test can also be used in conjunction with a compression test to diagnose other kinds of problems. You can combine tests to help figure out the problem, so don't rule out compression test.

    leak down test: Air coming out of the breather vent or PCV valve fitting would tell you the rings and/or cylinders are worn. Of course it's more to it.

    Compression test: If the psi are low it's either blown head gasket, bent valve, burnt valve etc...

    a compression test can also tell him if his head gasket is blown or his rings are shot. But i doubt the rings are bad.
