    Default 2008 Yamaha R6 - first 600 to break 170 mph

    From Autoblog

The last time that the Yamaha R6 was redesigned in 2006, the focus was purely on the racetrack, with street riding a distant thought in the backs of engineers minds. We're not suggesting that the R6 isn't a capable bike to ride on the street, but there are certainly far better choices if your main goal were to commute back and forth to work. On the track, however, the R6 shines with its high-RPM power band and razor-sharp handling traits. This year, the R6 got a few tweaks in an effort to add midrange power while still retaining its class-leading high-RPM punch, including a higher compression ratio, Yamaha's Chip Controlled Intake (YCC-I) and Yamaha's Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T). These changes have allowed the R6 to break the 170 mile-per-hour barrier, a first for a 600cc machine. Fortunately, Yamaha saw fit to increase chassis stability by reinforcing the steering head, engine mounting points and rear swingarm pivot, among other subtle tweaks. Suspension tuning is slightly different too, with a 41mm inverted fork and a more adjustable rear shock.

We are quite impressed by the speed and power that Yamaha has wrangled from its middleweight racer, which makes up more than half its total sportbike sales.

I'm assuming your asking if it's track proven 170 mph. Correct?

I agree, bikes are notorious for having bad speedo's. My SV reads over 140 and by my math for the gearing I should be at about 130.

Lol...I'd take that with a grain of salt. Yamaha had issues with their marketing dept claiming a certain redline on the tach which was eventually proven to not be true.

I like Yamaha (owned two of them), but I would be very wary of any such claims. Even R1's don't go that fast (stock)

Actually, I think most modern 1000s are limited at 186mph by federal law (instrument measured, not indicated). My dad's had a bunch of liter bikes going all the way back to the 1991 GSX-R 1100, which he had at 165 ONCE in the everglades, and he said it had at least another 15mph but he was on the verge of ****ting himself so he slowed down. lol.

    IDK for sure though.

My R1 (02) did over 170 stock. Measured on GPS also, not the speedo (speedos are never accurate on bikes). The new ones have even more top end power.

Both of the Graves R6s were doing over 170 in SuperSport in Daytona. I saw it myself. They showed it on TV also.

At those speeds, there's a big difference between indicated speed (what your speedo says) and actual speed (how fast you are actually going).

Bike speedometers are notorious for showing a higher speed than you are actually going (5%-10%)

I would not expect a stock r1 to go much faster than 160 (actual speed). If the speedo says 170, then you are probably actually doing between 157 and 162.

If it reads 180 (I've personally never heard of an R1 speedo reading 180), then you are actually doing between 162 and 171.

All that being said...... I still call BS on the yamaha 170 claim. I would suggest that anyone inclined to believe them should wait for 3rd party confirmation

Your talking about the 2006 17,500 tach that only goes to 16,000...that was bad.

Actually the 2006 and the 2007 R1 had the highest top speed of all the liter bikes. It may not have the power of the GSXR or the ZX-10 but it's got the perfect gearing for top speed runs.

I don't know w/ all the new bikes out for 2008 but I know for a fact that the R1s have the top mph in the literbike class.

And what speed would that be with 10% error? 162 mph.
If you want to do 170, get a hayabusa
