My first bike is my r6. It took me 2 weeks to get used to it. After a month or so I wanted to upgrade to a r1. But i also rode dirt bikes when i was a kid. If you have experience on dirt bikes or any other kind of motorcycle id say just go and hop on a 600 super sport. If you have no experience on any kind of motorcylce id say take the msf course, and if you feel comfortable on the bikes they teach you on just get a super sport. If not get a starter bike.
