Default Failed Emissions - What can I do?

Trying to get the registration up to date on the AE86, so I'm required to get my emissions checked again.

Anyway took it to the emissions place, and the car failed; so I figured I'd come here and see if anyone had ideas. Here's some possible contributing factors.

-The car has been sitting in the garage for nearly a year, and just got it's first new tank of gas in just as long, so I don't know how much that may have to do with it.
-The car still has a catalytic converter, and stock exhaust system, but I did install a header last summer; although there weren't any pre-cats on the stock exhaust manifold that I can recall.
-We also reset the timing by hand, and although the car doesn't feel as quick as it used too, it seems to be running pretty good, and making more mid-range grunt than it did before. Which leads me to believe the timing is off a tooth or so, but I don't know how much that could effect emissions.

I bought a can of Sea Foam, to clean out the injectors and what not to see if that helps, but if anyone has any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated.

the can of sea foam may have set a misfire code, or the gas in the tank may be bad. I would also check the fuel filter. if the timing is off a tooth then it can set many codes. what exactly did it fail on. NOX, CO ???

I would prefer he take the option of not being a douchebag and actually fixing the car. Though I assume your post was a joke.

Estis, what did it fail in the test? That would help us narrow it down for you.

never put seafoam or injector cleaner into a car before an emissions test! If I were still working at my old place I could help out but I took a break from it for awhile.

Can you post your Nox and CO numbers so I can see what the deal is. At the bottom of the emissions print out it should show numbers, one slot showing allowed numbers and the other side showing what your car did. I can let you know the common problems for the three different gases listed there. Also there's two different speeds, a 25mph test and a 15mph test. Post the gas numbers for both!

I agree, post all of your numbers, the ones that passed and the ones that failed. I can tell you exactly what's possibly going on.

I'm pretty sure it failed on HC output. I'll post when I know for sure.

I didn't put the sea foam in it yet, I was figuring I'd save that for after the test, to try and clear the carbon build up. I figured the gas in there was bad, but I put in a full tank of new stuff before the test.

It's OBD1, but it's not throwing codes. When I get home I'll grab the papers, and post the exact numbers it put out.

knowing the nox and co2 will help us determine if its running stupidly rich or not.

when my engine failed emissions, it was stupid rich and the exhaust was really cold even after hard driving

Clean engine with sea foam, then a new cat. Check if car is running rich.

for cars obd1 or obd0 the cat should be about 100 degrees hotter in the rear if it is working correctly.. if obd2 then should be about 100 degrees colder in the rear.... also hit the cat with ur hand.. if it rattles then the cat is no good......the brick is broken up on the inside.... let me know if u figure it out... i would drain that gas though if about a year old.....not good... if u want to clean out the motor.. there is some really strong stuff called b12 chemitool it will treat the gas and clean the motor of deposits.... also help on emissions... but if the car is runnig like crap it might be dumping fuel and burn up the cat also........ it would be good if u post the numbers.... IF U NEED A CAT CALL PAULS CUSTOM EXHAUST.....

You know you can keep that in PM's, right? I hate to be a nanny, but maybe you should read the forum rules, buddy. I think they said something about if you're not a sponser, then not to advertise.... something like that

According to the numbers the car is putting out too much PPM of NOX, which my buddy thinks is the EGR Valve.

EGR, Air filter, spark plugs, o2 sensor (correct me on that blackshine), and cat are the usual problems in occurance with high NoX.

^^ yeah, it can be, but he still never posted any numbers. I want numbers, dammit

By having the exact numbers, I can determine the difference between a bad cat and a bad EGR.
