there is so much misinformation in this thread it is disgusting. 3 stage vtec is strictly SOHC, so it is actually cheaper because it is on undesirable motors. you can't make vtec "hit" all of the time because then you defeat the purpose. and, again, you don't hear the switch. you hear the result of the solenoid allowing the flow of oil to change the camshaft profiles, inherently making the engine sound different.
edit: i just don't get what is so ****ing magical about vtec. it is nothing but ingenuitive thinking being applied to and engine to gain the "have your cake and eat it too"
