Default Low Cost Performance for a VW Jetta?

My boyfriend just bought a 98 Jetta 2.0L, It is a 5spd. It is slow when its in 1st and 2nd gear. To turn up a hill he has to almost come to a complete stop. Is there anything he can do that is cheap and will be a gain in horsepower? Does anybody know what is wrong? Somebody please help.

i think when she put " To turn up a hill he has to almost come to a complete stop ", i think she meant " just going up a hill his car almost comes to a complete stop because its so weak " lol

    Neuspeed Supercharger FTW.

There really is no really cheap solution to making an abundance more power, BTW. There's the option of nitrous, but that means you have to refill it ever so often depending on the shot. Turbocharging can drop the reliability by alot. Supercharging can work out very well for you and if tuned right, you'll probably get around the same gas mileage

intake, exhaust, & header might be the cheapest parts you can get for an increase in power

trade it in, seriously. the 2.0 is pretty hopeless. the 1.8t or vr6 are both nice upgrades.

I can assure you the only bad thing about that 2.0L is the power it makes naturally aspirated. That engine can take some boost and it's easier to work on than either the 1.8T and especially the VR6 engines. I'd do some more research on that engine before you go doubting it

There's really no hope for the 2.slow.

A VR6 is also N/A, I don't see what your getting at Blackshine. There is no hope for the 2.slow and doesn't matter what you do, it'll still be slow and just a waste of money, especially since the price of modding VW's is so damn expensive..

Lol, that car is slow in every gear not just 1st and 2nd. A cheap way to gain hp is to buy another car or vr6 swap it. I say dump him for actually buying a 2.0.

get an intake. simple only like mid 100's. also take it to a service place have it checked out, i did to my 240 and they changed O2 sensors and did wonders. also my friend could hardly go up hills with 320hp and found out the teeth on his flywheel were grinded down so check the clutch and flywheel considering that what send the engine power to the wheels. also check spark plugs and wires because if its unusually slower than other jettas then one or more plugs/wires might be out and one or more cylinders might not be running which will obviously slow it down alot. also have heard of this happening.

Chips work wonders for x.xT cars...they barely do anything for the VR6 and sure as hell don't do @$@$@$@$ for 2.slow's.

She has a 2.0, it doesn't matter what she does it'll be slow.

BTW Kyle that new sig looks nice

The 2.0 dose not need 93 octane. its a low compression motor

Do routine stuff too, rotor, cap, wire, plugs. Upgrade the motor mounts. Little upgrades like a cam, intake, exhaust, and maybe headers if you feel like going that far. Other then that there is no help for a 8v 2.slow.

nespeed's charger sucks, get the BBM if anything. 300hp on stock internal w/ stg3 kit.

Most european cars have plastic water pump impellers. It is so when they fail you don't have a big chink of metal floating around your cooling system. Also if a bolt breaks on the pump housing the pump won't grind away the block ruining the entire motor. I have changed probably 20 BWM water pumps and they all had plastic impellers.

Slap a turbo, manifold, downpipe, oil pan and oil lines from a Mk1 or Mk2 turbo diesel and buy a chip and you are good to go. Can be done for less than $500 and will make anywhere from 150-180 at the wheels.

This is for Mk3s only btw.

i think he means something a little cheaper then the 3k for the S/C setup. I got my cam and chip for 150$, make a HUGE difference compaired to stock ( depending on what degree)

I'd rather boost the 2.0L SOHC than to even touch the 1.8T and here's the reason; Less parts, easy as hell to tear down, you can make these engines fast. And besides, it's been around for almost 30 years, so naturally, there's a ton of parts for it. the SOHC gained my respect years ago. Damn a 1.8T. The only thing to brag about it is that the internals are forged and there's 5 valves. It's a decent motor, but I'd still take the 2.0 over the 1.8 any day of the week

    K series 626. That's right. It's got a K in it.

I dont know about that. My brother GTi put 200hp, 250lb/tq with a chip (old programing runing 10:1 a/f), intake, and cat back. Only a 140 more then a 2.0. not too sure thats a good move.

yup, honestly...you would take a 2.0 8v over a 1.8t to start with knowing the tunablity of each?

Honestly, I would. I wouldn't use a 3rd gen jetta chassis, though, but rather a gen2 golf chassis, like an '86 model. And then put GTI running gear on it. That would be hot as hell and boost the snot out of it

I've seen chipped one eight t's make over 200hp and 270tq. Why the hell would you want to do a custom turbo setup on a 2.slow and go through all the trouble of engine management is beyond me.

i wouldnt even bother modding it, unless you boost or swap. even then you will spend a lot to still be somewhat slow.
