there is a difference, but you have to go for the right combination. For example, a 8lb flywheel wouldn't really be ideal for a streetcar and you'll have trouble launching the car. Also another issue is that it could affect your powerband a little since the rpms will drop significantly with a lighter flywheel.
Stock is around 19lbs. i believe but just about any machine shop can machine one down to 12...
To keep the rev's up between shifts you just have to learn how to drive![]()
I weighed my stock B16 flywheel & it was 18 lbs .. I've been on my 7 lb flywheel for 2+ years & I've always loved everything about it.
I drive mine daily, I don't have trouble launching my car, & the lightened flywheel didn't have any adverse affects on my powerband; it actually picked up like 4 WHP/TQ cause I had dyno'd it before & after.
i have a 12lb...no probs here. i would never get a 7lb flywheel..i have driven cars with both and cars with feather weight flywheels are the loss imho
there is a BIG difference.
i recently got a 8-9lb flywheel and i feel and see the difference it makes.
the car gets up like hell, but i also notice the difference from a stand still and when making turns that may require downshifting.
I think I want me a lightweight flywheel...Just need the dang money. Actually I should upgrade to a 5spd first. LOL
thanxx guys......so im going with 12lbs,cause im running 500whp...so thanks
i like the 12lb or so lightened flywheels, they are not superlight but you can see a difference
You only live once, maybe twice if you use the e-brake!
i used an 8lb flywheel on my b20 for about a year (or so, i think...) and loved it! the car seem'd to lose a little tq (or so it felt like) but the car was substantially quicker. it'll take a couple days to get used to, as it requires a different driving technique, but its definatly worth the change.
to the OP, your friend doesn't know what they are speaking on.
a lighter flywheel enables the motor to accelerate faster - in that sense it actually frees up some power.
ask your 'knowledgable' buddy if big heavy 22" wheels make the car have more torque too! lol
